Talking How to stop chewing in her crate?

Here is my question. How do I stop Moka from chewing the bedding in her crate? When I first got her she use to have a blanket in there and chewed that up. Then the plastic bottom I had to take out cause she started chewing that up and I couldnt stand the noise with her nails on it. So about a month and a half ago I bought the canine cooler pad. It helps with her serve HD. Was working great till I came home and found water all of the place. She made a huge hole in it. I dont get it. She can't have anything it seems. So now we are back to square 1. I put the runner under the cage and now she has to sleep on top of the wires. Which I know can not be comfortable for her. I need to get her to stop doing this ASAP. See she will be having surgery soon on her hips and will be in the crate most if not all the time and I want to make it comfortable for her but I don't want her to chew up the beds that I put in there. How can I stop this? She has her kong, her marrow bone and other bones in her cage all the time. Some input would be great.

Thanks!

Re: How to stop chewing in her crate?

I think some dogs are just chewers. I was never able to leave any type of bedding or mats in Rocco's crate - he chewed up everything. I don't even really know if it had anything to do with chewing, I think he just preferred the plain tray that came with the crate because if the crate was open he'd simply remove whatever was in there. I realize you have a concern with the HD but, I'm sorry, I don't have a solution for this. Did the vet say anything about a tray alone being uncomfortable for the dog or were you just thinking that it would be? (That would be my thought too but dogs think different than we do. )

Re: How to stop chewing in her crate?

Dogs don't need any type of bedding in their crate. Especially if they are going to chew on it. Have you tried putting items in there that she can chew on? Maybe a Nylabone? Our dog Nikki destroyed every type of bedding that was put in her crate, so now she gets none and it doesn't hurt her a bit. Maybe just hang around her so she can be corrected when she chews what she's not supposed to.

Sorry but I haven't asked the vet about it. I dont like useing the plastic tray cause when she moves around alot her nails scratching on it is very annoying. And she already chewed all the edges of the plastic up. Honestly I dont know if it would or wouldn't be comfortable for her to lay on the plastic tray. I know if it was me I would be very uncomfortable laying on it.

There is always a kong, marrow bones and other bones in her cage all the time. I would love to hang around but she is caged from 3pm till 7pm when I am not home.

Try getting some lenolium from the hardware store and with adhesive, glue it to the plastic tray....No more Nail noises

Same thought as babybluetx23, but what about indoor/outdoor carpet? or real carpet but glued or taped (2 sided carpet tape is great) in the tray? You could get under-pad too to add to the comfort level.
I used a cedar filled cushion once for our shiba.... I picked up shavings for weeks after she dug through it. She finally out grew that stage as she found she loves comfort.
Good luck!

We had that problem too with Jules. A 10 week old puppy in a crate with a pillow full of cedar shavings. A deadly combo.

Julius actually prefers to lie on the plastic pan although there are blankets in his crate. Sometimes he'll push them to the side so that he can rest on the cool plastic.

Re: How to stop chewing in her crate?

Brodie can not have a dog bed in his crate as he will chew it up the first day, found that out the hard way!! We were able to leave a blanket in there for him after the first 6 months of us having him. He would still rip it sometimes, but he did not tear it apart like he did the bed. He didn't seem to mind the plastic tray. in fact he seemed to prefer it especially in the summer time because the plastic is cooler.
