New Owner

Yesterday we became the new family of an 8 week old male. Always had dogs but never a Rotti. We have been "empty nesters" for nearly 2 yrs. since the passing of our last dogs. Did a lot of reading and research before making our decision but would more than welcome thoughts from "veteran" owners. We couldn't be more thrilled to have Dutch as a new family member.

Re: New Owner

Welcome! I am a relatively new owner and this forum has been invaluable as I raise my boy, a 2 year old rescue Rott.

Prepare to be addicted, prepare to feel like each of folks are personal friends, prepare to care and love all the dogs you read about here and did I mention to prepare to be totally addicted????

Re: New Owner

Oops, I think it's already happening. Just this morning my husband was asking would I consider going back and getting one of Dutch's brothers. Didn't want the little guy to be lonely. Like that would happen when he's already content to sit with me while I work at the computer :) We are used to having two dogs so who knows just maybe we will make another trip this afternoon. Last night wasn't too bad as far as puppies go only woke up once at 2:30 and thought it was time to play. We are off to our vet this a.m. to get everything checked out.

DUTCH! What a wonderful name!! I'll bet he's really something, too. Bet the little guy has you wrapped around his little paw already. Watch out! They get you attatched to them pretty quick.

Get looking around for some puppy classes. You'll be wanting to devote a couple of years to training him properly.

Welcome to the forums.
Please do NOT get two puppies at the same time. Littermates are not twice as much work...it will be 10 times as much !!! When Dutch is 3-4 years of age ...then think of getting another dog. Pups do not need playmates...they need you. Many people with littermates have problems with their pups bonding with one another...instead of you. Having same sex littermates could be big problems in the future with male to male aggression...and that could be heartbreaking.

Dutch will be keeping you on your toes....and taking up alot of your time now...with training, etc....he should be your # 1 priority right now. Start looking for Puppy Kindergarden classes...he will be ready to start in about a month.

Re: New Owner

Welcome to the forums!

I must agree with Brunie's Mom. I think I would have gone insane if I had two puppies at the same time. Since they need to be trained/socialized seperatly it would be twice the work & wow, they take so much work on their own.

We're planning on getting another puppy once Julius hits 4 or 5 years old. He's content to have us for buddies & play around with us.

Re: New Owner

Thanks for the advice about two. I know you are right and frankly I would have stopped him if he tried to go. One is a lot of work and it's been 15 yrs since we had a puppy. Forgot how much it's like having a human baby. We are already planning classes for him and us. This breed gets such a bad rap and that makes me sad. Some of the sweetest dogs I have met lately have be Rotts. I really believe that 90% of the time it isn't bad dogs, it's bad owners! I truly appreciate knowing that you are all out there and that we can learn from you.
