Hurting your dog by mistake!

As I was reading that thread about the guy that opened the door on his dog's leg...I wondered if any behaviorists or experts know what goes on in a dog's mind (obviously, not literally) when you step on a dog's foot by accident, or any other type of accident? I can't even count how many times I've poked Harley in the eye by accident by her quick movement or whatever...what do you think they make of that?

Or they might be thinking, "Wow! Is she stupid for poking me so often. I need to watch out for her."

Naaahhhhh, stupid?????? Hey, clumsy maybe.....

Well, either way, they keep an eye out. No, they do not think it was deliberate (unless you are berating them at the time it happens)

Re: Hurting your dog by mistake!

Poor Jules if he thought I was doing it deliberatly. Good question though, Lookie. I'm such a clumsy person. I'm always tripping over Jules or stepping on his paw. I bet at times like those he's happy that he doesn't have a tail. Just one more thing for me to trip over or step on.

Re: Hurting your dog by mistake!

Since Chase loves to sleep on the floor by my bed, I am constantly tripping over her, stepping on her and kicking her in the face. The only time she has ever raised her head over this was the night I stuck my toe up her nose!

I keep a small light on in my room 24/7 now. I am quite sure that she wishes I was more like the cat - able to see in the dark!

Re: Hurting your dog by mistake!

I thought this thread was going to be a little different when I read the title. I used to wrestle with my girl (when she was younger) on the bed every night before we went to sleep. One time I was laying on her leg and she decided to move too quickly for me. She ended up twisting her leg real bad but nothing broke. She limped around for a week or two and I felt terrible for causing her the pain.
The toe stepping, and eyepoking happen alot and she just yipes. She hasn't learned yet to stay out of my way. I usually call her dumb dog when she yelps. You think she would learn to move out from under me.

Re: Hurting your dog by mistake!

When we accidentally step on or trip over Psyche she thinks its treat time. Our fault on that one. I wanted her to always know it was unintentional so anytime my daughter or anyone accidentally stepped on her or tripped over her we would go OOOOPSSSSSSS Sorry........lets go get a treat!!!!!

So now if you trip over her or step on her while sleeping she jumps up and runs to the treat jar........

I would hope so. If not, she should have smelt it coming and moved!

Re: Hurting your dog by mistake!

Mine does most of that himself. He is famous for turning right into doorframes and walls. One of these days he is going to knock himself either out or looney.

Re: Hurting your dog by mistake!

We've all done it. But then again, they've done it to us! The big paw comes up and swats you in a moment of excitement. The top of your foot is bruised from being stepped on so many times. Parker once headbutted me under the jaw so hard that I thought I saw stars!

Accidentally hurting each other is a part of life. We do it to our family members, we do it to our pets, and they do it right back to us! I wouldn't worry about it too much. Accidents happen!
