Adding a new puppy...

Hi, I'm new here and I am hoping to gain some valuable insight from more experienced rotti owners.

Background info...My pup, Kash, is 4 years old, about 105lb. beautiful pure-bred. He is EXTREMELY aggresive towards most other dogs (not small ones), and all strangers. He is the smartest dog I have ever owned, he has been extensively trained in various protection and regular every-day activities. I would really like to get another dog to keep him company during the day while me and my girlfriend are at work/school. We have a single family home, about 1500sq ft., a medium sized fenced in yard.

I would like to get another dog, not as big as a rotti, that doesn't shed as much. We already have to vaccum everyday, and I do not want another load of dog hair on top of the blackend floors from Kash, lol. I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations or experiences with adding a new puppy to the home with an adult rottweiler. I don't know much about other dogs, so I am open for suggestions. Thanks.

This may not be the answer you want, but your current dog may not want another dog in the house for company. What you see as company, he may see as having to share everything he currently considers to be his own. Rotties can be very people oriented dogs and just want your company. That's not to say you can't bring a puppy into the house hold, it's just another way of seeing things.

Re: Adding a new puppy...

Yeah, I appreciate the response. That scenerio did cross my mind, but let me explain why I think adding a smaller dog would be a good solution.

My girlfriend's mother has a ????su that he absoluetly adores. Whenever her mother comes over, she brings Montey, and Kash goes absoluetly nuts. He loves playing with Montey, he lays with him, they run around the yard together, etc. He only barks at dogs that are close to his size or bigger, so I was thinking something like a Jack Russell, but I really don't have any experience outside of the Rottweiler breed.

Long haired dogs shed less then short haired dogs. Sounds wrong, but the shedding undercoat is held in by the top coat. You have to brush more but vacuum less. Usually. My rottweiler and beagle mix, seperately, shed considerably more then my collie ever did!

Re: Adding a new puppy...

Hi Kashy,
Welcome to the forum. We are happy to have you join us. If Kash is aggressive towards other dogs you may want to think twice about adding another one to your household. It may cause more problems then not.

If you are set on getting another dog then be sure and do your homework before making your final decision. If you decide on a Jack Russell, be prepared for a VERY high energy dog. They can be great companions, for very active people. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Re: Adding a new puppy...

Thanks for the replies guys. As long as it is a smaller dog, i.e. a jack russell size or even a little bit bigger, he'll be fine with it. He's really a big teddy bear, he's so playful at home and is really a great with my girlfriend's mom's dog, now it's just a matter of finding a good companion.

As most of you do (i'm assuming), you and your mate probably both work or go to school during the day, so I'm not sure if a JRT would be the best solution since we will not be home 6-7 hours out of the day. I was kind of hoping to get recommendations for dogs that maybe I haven't considered. Thanks again.

Check your local shelter or rescue group. You may just find an older mixed breed dog that would love to grace your couch while you are at work. You might even find one that is housebroken and won't chew on your furniture!
