Kong Stuffing....

So Julius got his first Kong this weekend from the owners of the doggie spa for being a demo dog. We hadn't bought one for him before now because we didn't think he would like it. WRONG!!!

But, there was this package at the open house that was free of this Kong Stuffing. They're just these little pellets (kinda look like rabbit food but bigger) made out of liver & other stuff. Anyone ever used it & how the heck do you fill a Kong with it? Do you moisten it? It would fall out if you put it in dry. Just wondering..........

Re: Kong Stuffing....

We put peanut butter in along with other treats and freeze it. Hours of enjoyment.

I think I'm going to try the yogurt & wheat germ recipe first & stuff the Kong with it since Jules already loves it. And then it's on to p-butter. He'll be in heaven!!!

Re: Kong Stuffing....

Yup, Harley loves her peanut butter and milkbones in her kong. Or just straight pb. She has two kongs, and the little one takes her FOREVER to get the stuff out of, but she does it!!! It's amazing how they work their paws to hold on to the kong while she works at it.

Re: Kong Stuffing....

Cyrus had no interest in his kong until I stuffed it with canned dog food and kibble...now he is VERY interested. He doesn't like peanut butter at all!

The only thing I can think of is perhaps you need something else in there like peanut butter or something. The canned food is what keeps the kibble in when I stuff it for Cyrus.

Re: Kong Stuffing....

I dont know about those little rabit pellets, but we stuff ours with anything the dogs will eat. They get stuffed with cheese, rollover, kibble, bananna, cheese whiz, peanut butter etc. You can even plug the small end and fill it with beef broth and freeze for a summer treat. The more stuff you jam in there, the longer it will take for them to get it out.
I would suggest going to the Kong web site and checking out some of the suggestions there. http://www.kongcompany.com/

Also remember to wash them out often (they are dish washer safe)

Brooke, how did you get to where you are with Jules with out a Kong? I could not even imagine having a pup without one.

Re: Kong Stuffing....

When I take Rocco to class I always stuff a kong for Perle. I put cheese and Mother Hubbard treats in it, or peanut butter and pieces of MH cookies, or freeze ahead a yogurt and kibble kong. She's not particular. One week I didn't have time to stuff a kong for her and she stood in the kitchen looking at me with such a sad look on her face (which she's really good at, by the way ) I swore that would never happen again! I gave her a cookie but it wasn't the same.

Marrow bones & a lot of exercise. A tired pup is a happy pup!

Re: Kong Stuffing....

I actually break up dog biscuits into smaller pieces and put them in there. I then layer with kong liver paste, another layer of biscuits or treats, then a layer of Easy Cheese etc. This way this treats don't fall out. I would use peanut butter, but Herc doesn't seem to like it picky eater that he is.

Otherwise, I would stick to treats that you could break or stuff in there that won't fall out (homemade live treats are good too! ). Besides, it makes them work for their treats! I do this with Hercules in the morning when I leave for work (mild seperation anxiety) and this way he doesn't notice me walking out the door. In the beginning, I would come home from work and he'd bring me his kong as there was still usually 1 or 2 treats stuffed in there that I'd have to shake out for him. Now, he's a pro! When I come home and check the Kong it's completely empty!

Re: Kong Stuffing....

We use peanut butter or low fat cream cheese to block up the hole, and stuff all kinds of things inside. Change it up for variety!

Re: Kong Stuffing....

I was basically just wondering about the rabbit pellet stuff that was labeled as Kong stuffing. Just wondering how it was used. I think very rarely will we stuff a Kong for Julius. He's pleased as punch with his Nylabones & raw bones.

Hahahahaha, Jules would join him in the feast.

Oh, poo eating reminds me about agility. (It's held at a horse farm). I'm sending you a PM Patty about when classes start. I just found out.

I had no idea they were dishwasher safe. That is good to know!

The kong is one of Akasha's favorite toys. When people come over to the house she usually greets them with her kong in her mouth. As soon as my husband comes home from work Akasha runs to get her kong and then takes it to him.

We sometimes stuff the kongs with peanut butter or cheese whiz. I have also used the liver kong stuffing which both dogs seemed to like. I have never used the rabbit pellet stuffing before.
