4. Have the dogs in a secured confined backyard, where there is no chance for the dogs to escape, or for someone to easily break-in or trespass into your property (WARNING: DO NOT CHAINED THE DOGS OUT!)

5. Have DAILY contact with your dogs and spend a couple of hours with them throughout the day (FORGETTING or NEGLECTING your dogs will create behavior and temperament problems, with potential unstable aggression)

6. Allow your dogs inside your house every so often and let them feel part of the pack (family)

7. Have the dogs fully obedience trained, and

8. Walk and exercise your dogs every day (maybe one day off out of the week)

Then, your dogs will be OK. However, if you cannot provide all of the above, then forget it; you will have serious problems with forgotten and neglected backyard dogs. Don't even try.
My question is on Number 8: This week it has Rained nearly EVERY day so I am unable to take harley for a walk however I have been playing inside with him and running him around the house, is this sufficiant until the rain subsides? I just want to make sure he is getting enough exersize.

Re: Another Question about exercise

I guess it's going to have to be until the weather changes. I'm not trying to sound sarcastic but no one wants to go out when the weather is misserable. I know that during our rainy season, mine tend to get more zoomies inside the house from lack of our walks -- it's their way of blowing off energy.

Re: Another Question

When we had pretty powerful rain last month I did the same thing.

A few days here and there I am sure is OK as long as we have made daily exercise a routine.

I myself think thats fine. I like hide the treat games in the home. If you don't have 2 or more food territorial dogs that is. I hide them all over the house and encourage her to find them.

Since Psyche loves to retrieve I also just sit on my butt watching TV and throw the stupid toy 100 times........ Occasionally to keep her going I play tug with the toy she retrieved..........

And boy have we had rain this week hu?????????? And looks like good ole Texas is gonna be hit for several more days. I feel awful because we had such a huge storm yesterday(The limb flying kind) that I didn't watch Psyche close enough on her outings. It was kinda like quick go peepee and get back in. Well she had her first ever accident in our home since we moved in. It was both peepee and poopoo and it was after we went to bed. She must have held it a long time......... I really didn't understand it because she loves to play in the rain but these were pretty bad storms.

When I got up to use the bathroom she showed it to me herself........

Thank Goodness she chose the ceramic tile............

These are not normal storms we are talking about. We are having hail, trees falling, flooding..you name it. Yesterday my kid had to do the tornado drill at school because a funnel cloud touched down just a block behind them.

This is happening all over Texas. We get breaks but they have been small breaks. Yesterday it rained hard hard hard for us almost 12 hours straight. I had to suck my gut in and go out in it because stuff in my backyard was getting blown away and I have all windows facing the back. I already lost one big window I'm not about to loose another...

Today has been much nicer for us but looks like we are just a few hours away from getting another big hit........

Re: Another Question about exercise

Where in the heck do you live that your getting THAT bad of weather?!?! We didnt get it THAT bad this week but we have had the Flash Floods.
I feel terrible that I am unable to get harley out and about for a walk. I MAY just take him to petsmart tonight JUST to get some exercise. Poor guy he has had the zoomies AT LEAST 10 times a night! hehehehe I have been throwing toys across the house and letting him run after them and also chasing him around the house but our house isnt THAT big so I just KNOW he isnt getting a lot of exercise.

Willis Texas which is lined up with Conroe. I live a few blocks off Lake Conroe. We are about 45 miles north off Houston limits.

This is pretty much what a lot of areas have dealt with this week.........

Re: Another Question about exercise

Where I live…it’s never rained or been to cold to take my dogs out for at least 2 daily walks. If the pup/dog is socialized and adjusted to the climate it will stand even extreme weather… not for hours but at least for short(er) daily walks. I am much more aware of the heat than the cold but I have never heard of a dog damaged or died by rain. They are not made of sugar!

Re: Another Question about exercise

Oh dont get me wrong, if it werent terrential downpours or Flash flooding I would just grab an umbrella and go for the walk. harley LOVES the rain and water and heck anything wet! But the weather in Texas in the spring is just VERY volitile. It can turn on you in a split second. Not only that but it wasnt just a spring rain this week. It has been Severe Thundserstorm warnings with VERY gusty winds, (60+ Mile Per hour winds) with flooding and a LOT of lightning. I Am NOT going for a walk in that! hehehe We have some really violent spring storms here in tornado alley.

Re: Another Question about exercise

Julius gets two walks a day rain or shine. I actually love the rain so I'm always out & about in it.

We got Julius an Outward Hound rain-jacket for when it's POURING outside. It does an awesome job of keeping him dry for the most part. Only his head & paws get wet. It comes in handy on those days when it's a torrential downpour.

I agree though, usually even in rain a dog can be walked and even in our weather yesterday there were breaks in the dangerous times.

babybluetx23 I didn't mean to assume that your weather was like ours. I guess I assumed it because all of Texas has been through really bad storms this week. Today has been really nice but I'm hearing we have more bad storms coming in.

And on that sad note it happens in Houston all the time......... And no it is not just the strays or dogs owned by irrisponsible owners. Not by the rain itself of course but by the results of the storm itself.

As babybluetx23 said:Tornados, Floods (ESPECIALLY floods), High Winds, straightline winds, Hail, ect

Best to stay in at these times.......
