I can't find a place to live, help!!

Hi, I am new here and didn't know where to post this, sorry if it is the wrong place. I have a 3 year old wonderful rottie. We have rented a house the past 3 years in the nw suburbs of Illinois. We are now having to move (lease is up and rent has increased too high) What I am finding is that NO ONE accepts rotties (obviously b/c of their reputation) And the places that do accept them are such ghettos that you couldn't pay me to live there. I am so frustrated and quite scared actually. I have found that some condos will rent to us b/c there assc.'s don't have breed restrictions, but you can never book those places 2-3 months in advance, they come and go so quickly. Where as apt.s you can reserve months in advance. Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone else have any suggestions for me? I am so frustrated, arghhhhh! And giving up my rottie IS NOT AN OPTION, he is like a child to me, I just couldn't bare to part w/ him. :(

I am not too sure what your government says on this. But, here we are allowed to bring in a dog to any house, townhouse, apartment etc...unless it is a privately owned property and they do not want pets. They are not allowed to refuse us any more just because we have a dog or cat or the likes. Is it not the same there???? oh and by the way welcome to the forum!

Is there any way you can have a family member keep him until you can find a place that WILL except him. That way you arent giving your rottie up and you know he is in good hands? Maybe find a long term boarding facility that you trust to where you can go see him every day?

I cant understand for the LIFE of me why places would turn down a potential client just because they have a rottie! ARG! Every rottie I have EVER come across has been a great big teddy bear. Because of a few bad apples the whole bunch of us has to suffer........stinks!

Re: I can't find a place to live, help!!

I guess I have 2 perspectives on this 1) as a dog owner and lover 2) as a rental property owner. I have rented to other pet owners with mixed success, it is very hard to tell how responsible they are untill after they have moved in. Obviously buying a house would fix the problem, but likley not a fesable option with limited time.
One thing to do is dress your best when meeting potential landlords, and bring some info about your dog. If you show them some recent vet info, or maby a letter from your current landlord about how well you look after your pup, maby your training cetificates it may be enough to let them overlook the rules. If you can persuade them into thinking that they would be crazy to not give you their appartment, they may let the rotti thing slide. You may as a last resort make some special conditions to you moving in that would benifit the landlord, like cut the grass and shovel the snow for free, or sell them on the idea of building security. Just uses you imagination and dont give up.

Re: I can't find a place to live, help!!

I guess I would start looking on the net to see if there are any nearby apartments. I found an article in the Chicago Tribune that address this sort of issue.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/classi...nting-hedVisit

There are three links at the bottom of the page that might help in your search...
www.apartmentdog.com, www.peoplewithpets.com and www.anticruelty.org for more details about renting with pets.

Its sad that so many places are agains this breed. I hope you can find an apartment or a home rental that will allow your dog. I liked the articles suggestion of creating a reference list for your dog.

I wish you luck on your search, I dont know the Ill area very well, maybe someone else will know of a specific apartment location. You might also contact the rottie rescue groups in Ill. Maybe they would have some knowlege of places you could go?

I would suggest that you bite the bullet and pay the higher rent on a month to month until you find a place and then grab it up. That might mean a few weeks of double rent, but you would have a home.

Re: I can't find a place to live, help!!

I earlier responded to the message you sent Recycled Rotts, but will also post the same info here. Here is the link from the Anti-Cruelty Society (Chicago) website to a list of pet-friendly apartments both in the city and the suburbs http://www.anticruelty.org/pet_friendly_apt.html.
There are also a number of petfriendly places that accept rotties in the Schaumburg, IL area.

Good Luck

Re: I can't find a place to live, help!!

Not trying to be a pain, but where in schaumburg? We have REALLY looked everywhere, I mean really tried. We know we are going to have to pay more somewhere, which is fine. But all the places we have found that take rotties are total slums. Maybe my idea of slum and yours :) differ, I don't know....but we havent had much luck. If you know any of the names of these places, please post so I can get on it. Thanks a lot everyone for all your help....... I appreciate it!!

Schaumburg is just a hop, skip and a jump from Rolling Meadows. Do you know where Woodfield Mall is? Schaumburg is right there. We have a number of adoptors that live over there and either rent very nice apartments, or townhomes. Make some calls to a number of real estate agents in the area, at least one of them might be able to help you with rental property.

Re: I can't find a place to live, help!!

I rented on a month to month basis until I found a condo to buy in South Beach, Miami - if you can do it here, you should be able to find a place near you as well. Indeed, look at rent.com for renting, that is how I did it and I had to search from ITALY when I signed the contract for a short term lease. You may HAVE to leave a particular city to find you best match, but you should be able to get close.
