What to do with all that poop?

We have 3 large dogs at home which equals a large amount of poop. I was just curious what other people with multiple dogs do with all that waste. I found a septic system for dogs, has anyone given this idea a try? http://www.pet-expo.com/Dog_Dooley.htm.
With the summer months comming, I would perfer to have a decent smelling yard this year! :p

Re: What to do with all that poop?

1) Scoop into empty kibble bags. When full, off to the dump with the rest of the trash. That way it leaves the same way it arrived.

2) Scoop and dump over the stone wall between our yard and the cow pasture in a futile attempt to discourage the deer.

Re: What to do with all that poop?

EWWWW!!! hhehee We have someone who mows our lawn for us (a friend who will NOT take charity, so we let him mow, weed eat, edge, and bag the grass, for $20.00)
He just mows over the stuff! YUCK! But with in a day the smell is gone and it sort of fertalizes the Yard. I would rather get rid of it with one of those systems. I will show it to my husband when I get home.

Re: What to do with all that poop?

Cynthia, we have one of those doggie septic systems (already installed when we bought the house) and it's okay - but ours was designed for less poop than we currently manufacture, so be sure you buy the right one for the job at hand :) We just bought a really good pooper scooper and I scoop at least every other day, into a small trash can with heavy liner, then the trash man gets it twice a week....I'm sure he LOVES us dearly.....don't you think?

Re: What to do with all that poop?

When we lived in Miami and had four large dogs, we had a doggie dooley that looked like that round model. It worked real well and kept the odor down. We did have to add the chemicals to it regularly.

Re: What to do with all that poop?

Thanks all, it looks like I'm not the only one on daily poop patrol. My house is on a solid bed of clay and the septic idea is just not for me. Our dog excercise area is all gravel so it is not to bad to scoop (most of the time :p ), just the joys of K9 companionship.

Re: What to do with all that poop?

My kids pick up the poop every day after school. If done every day, it's only 2 'piles' at most, and there is never any offending odors!

I pay them, it's not slave labor! It's all worked into their allowance!

Re: What to do with all that poop?

Well we only have one dog but we have a "poop" trash can which really smells lovely in the summer. It's around the side of the house though so we really only ever go over there to throw poo in the trashcan. Works well for us.

:)

I have a friend that has a Rottie and they have this system in their backyard. They really like it a lot. However, I think you have to add compost mixture and water to it, so you'd have to pick a spot in the yard that you can pull a hose over to reach it to. They tried to sell me on the idea, which the idea isn't a bad one. But I just couldn't bear the thought of having a poop disposal in my yard. Besides, my hose wouldn't reach to the end of the yard so I'd have to put it close to the patio - so I passed on it! ;)

Re: What to do with all that poop?

You know, it's funny.

I don't have a yard. So all of Parker's potty breaks are with me while he's on leash or if we're in the trails at the park. But either way - I'm with him. Every BM he has, I pick up. :p

BUT when we're up north visiting my family, Parker can be let out into the yard. So there, it can be 'left' while you're standing in your pj's at the door calling "hurry up"! :D

However, I find it much more gross to have to do yard patrol than I do picking up on a walk. Strange huh? I do it all the time, sometimes twice a day - no problem.... Let that stuff sit out there for a few days? YUCK! :p LOL

We have a large garbage can outside and with every BM in it's own individual bag, the smell doesn't get the chance to raise and it's gone every week with the trash.

Re: What to do with all that poop?

I have two dogs that are pooping machines. I just go out in the yard and hose them into the grass every day. Works well- dogs poop, I hose into grass, poop gone- grass green. :D

Re: What to do with all that poop?

I have a 2.5 gallon plastic bucket with a locking lid purchased from Home Depot. Costs about $4 and I put it in the back corner of the yard. I line it with a plastic kitchen trash bag. I pick up the poop daily (about 4 piles) and put it in the can along with whatever the dogs leave on a walk. Every third week the trash guy is lucky because it gets double-bagged in the dog food bag. This is the least smelly and economical way I've found.
