Re: Law May Force Some N.M. Dogs To Wear Seat Belts

I am so glad to see this. I get anxiety seeing all the dogs around here riding in the back of trucks, and some even standing on top of bed tool boxes. I have seen two dogs thrown out, and I just shudder when I see a dog in the back of a truck. I have to admit, I have not looked into safety restraint for my guys, but I think I will. Santa Fe is truly "the city different" though. just cause Santa Fe does it, won't mean the rest of the state follows the example.

Its about high time that this type of legislation came out. We bought the van specifically to be able to crate the dogs when transporting them.

babybluetx23-

We just got a seat belt for link at Petsmart last weekend. He is about 110 lbs and we got the large and it is adjustable. It fits him great and will still provide him with growing room if we need it. He seems comfortable in it and I feel much more secure.

hehe Harley is still a puppy! hehe He is only 19 - 20 weeks so he is still pretty small. I just dont want to buy an adult one and he is unable to fit in to it. But I dont want to buy a medium size one and then two weeks from now he is too big for it. In the mean time when he is in the car with me he sits on the passanger seat and he lets me buckle him up with the Human seat belt. hehehehe

Re: Law May Force Some N.M. Dogs To Wear Seat Belts

I got a seatbelt for Cyrus, a large and it adjusts nicely to fit.

I just have the darndest time getting the car seatbelt threaded through the loop! It doesn't help that I drive a 2 door.

Anyone have any tips to make it easier?

Re: Law May Force Some N.M. Dogs To Wear Seat Belts

I have a small car, 2-door, as well. The dogs ride in the back seat and I got a seatbelt connector strap at Petco. It hooks from the dog harness directly into the seatbelt connector ($21). Avoids the need for threading the seatbelt through the harness. I had to go with this because if I used the seatbelt Rocco kept trying to chew threw it (was successful once). :(

Thanks! I'll get one of those this week.

Re: Law May Force Some N.M. Dogs To Wear Seat Belts

Sebastian has been wearing a safety harness since his first ride in the truck (from his foster home to his forever home with me), as a 16 week old. Now all I have to do is hold it in front of him and he walks into it.

I've tried a couple of different seatbelt harnesses on Sebastian, both bought at Petsmart. With the first one, the strap that ran between the front legs was just a lightly-padded black strap, and you had to run the seatbelt through it. It was kind of a pain.

THEN I found another harness that was actually located in Petsmart's travel section (the first one was located in the collar/leash/harness section). This one has heavy fleece padding that goes between the front legs and across the chest. It attaches to the car's seatbelt system by a hefty nylon strap with a heavy-duty metal clip.

He absolutely never rides without his seat belt harness. . .and I often let him wear it when we walk around at Petsmart. . .maybe to encourage some other owners to start buckling up their dogs.
