recommended puppy chew toys?

This is my first time here! I'm not sure if I am doing this right, but here goes...our little angel is 6 months old and her name is Nina. She LOVES to chew (surprise). We give her cornstarch bones, but she'll go through one in a few hours until we take it away when it gets too small. She doesn't like her Kong unless it has peanut butter or a treat inside. She's really not very destructive. She steals shoes & socks if we forget to hide them, but our furniture (SO FAR) is pretty much ignored. Can anyone recommend a sturdy chew toy that she might be interested in? She can't really have cloth/stuffed toys because she'll rip them up. She likes ice cubes, but they melt too quick, or she eats them too fast. She's not a fan of rubber-type toys (i.e. Kong or the like). Any ideas or advice about what your puppies like would be helpful! :o) Debi

Re: recommended puppy chew toys?

Welcome to the forums!!

Have you tried the other Kong items? They have ones that have tennis ball fuzz. The line is called Air Kong . Do you give her any other bones besides the cornstarch ones? A nice raw marrow bone is good for hours for gnawing on around here. Brodie loves them. And it's a great way of keeping teeth clean.

Re: recommended puppy chew toys?

I would be careful about the Air Kongs :( Bailey chewed that green fuzzy casing off and it made her sick..she threw up several times. My best recommendation is the Gumabone by Nylabone and the hard Nylabone products. They are now making Big Chews For Big Dogs that are also very good.

I just use the Kongs to stuff when I have to leave the girls for a time as a pacifier. Make sure the peanut butter you use comes from the health food store..the commercial brands are LOADED with icing sugar. The Nylabone products can be smeared with a little GOOD peanut butter to 'charge them' any time as well.

I second the marrow bone suggestion. They are cheap, last a long time and the dogs really love them. I buy them from a meat packing store and freeze them so they stay fresh. We call them bonecycles around here.

Buster cubes or something like that. You can put treats or part of the meals inside and they have to work to get it. They have little compartments that the treats slip into and the dog has to roll it around so it will fall out.

Re: recommended puppy chew toys?

Harly loves the dental ropes, she'll go through one every 2 weeks or so, but it keeps her from chewing the carpet . I also use the nyla bones with the hard outer edge and softer center, she loves those too. She's had that one for over 2 months and still hasn't worn it out.

Re: recommended puppy chew toys?

You could always stuff the Kong with kibble some PB and freeze that...

I've also been known to spread a thin layer of PB on the inside of the marrow bone and that usually keeps them happy for awhile as well...

Re: recommended puppy chew toys?

Hi Debi
Welcome to the forum. There are a couple of things that my male absolutly loves and they have lasted years, believe it or not. The Gallaleo bone by nylabone is great. I know you mentioned that she doesn't like her kong but that may be because she can't get her mouth around it. If you are close to an Old Navy they carry these solid rubber type bones (in tons of colors) that Payton just can't get enough of. They are cheap and easy to clean. Kong also make a product that looks like a flying saucer and you can jam treats into the holes, that keeps Payton busy for a while. And then there is his invincible rings........Drs. Fosters & Smith carries them they are great...here is the link to them http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...45&N=2001+2011

Hope these help

your right here actually anything that is remotly made like a tennis ball should not be used as a chew toy only for fetching and water play..... it has been found that the glues and dyes in the covering and the texture damage the enamel of the dogs teeth... anything from nylabone is a good choice and also the big pressed rawhide bones(not the ones with knots on the end) are good also

I've always been told that rawhide isn't good for your dog. It's not able to be digested and could cause bloackages. Was I misinfomed?

that is why you use the pressed rawhides the ones with the knots on the end can and do get stringy and come off in big chunks the pressed rawhides do not do this like anything else you have to take it away when it gets too small... but the whole rawhide story of blockages and stuff is highly inflated(it does happen) dogs get blocked by many things socks -balls -kongs and tennis balls are a major prob. if the dog is unsupervised.. i have asked the rawhide question of the last 3 vets ive used over several years and not a one of them has had to remove a rawhide from a dog... but i feel it is important to make sure that you get the pressed ones and with any bone or hide treat make sure they are american made!!!!

Re: recommended puppy chew toys?

I second the marrow bones. Julius gets at least 2-3 a week & just adores them. They keep him occupied for quite awhile & make his teeth look AWESOME!

Julius really doesn't care for any rubber toys either. We've never bought him a Kong because I know he would probably care less about one. BUT, we do have the Kong Biscuit Ball (http://www.petsmart.com/global/produ...=1080154048012) which Julius loves. You can stuff treats inside & it can be very tricky for the dogs to get out. Julius loves his.

I'm with Larry....we also give Julius pressed rawhide every once in awhile. Sometimes we'll stick it in his Kong Biscuit Ball & he has a blast. But, he's always supervised & he's never bitten off a huge chunk.

Also, like everyone else said, anything from Nylabone is an awesome buy. Julius showed no interest in them until Ryan roughed them up with a file & now that's basically all that Jules chews. Sometimes we'll boil it in a bit of chicken broth & that's always a big hit around the house.

:)

That's a great idea, I think I'm going to steal that! :D

Re: recommended puppy chew toys?

Rocco wasn't able to tolerate raw marrow bones (threw up). For that reason, I haven't tried them with Perle. Mine love pressed rawhide bones. They last a lot longer and are better than the regular ones. My sister worked as a vet tech for about 10 years and the vets there said they've opened up dogs for blockages with a lot of things but never as a result of rawhide. Mine also like the nylabones for average chewers. They're softer and they can actually chew on them - I take them away when they get too small but they last a really long time. They don't like the harder ones for strong chewers because they can't sink their teeth into them. Mine also like dental ropes but I have to watch when they start eating them - makes for stringy poop that doesn't always come out all the way by itself, if ya know what I mean
