Long Hair Rottie?

A Friend Of Mine Showed Me A Picture Of A Rottie That Appeared To Have Sort Of Scruffy Looking Coat. From The Picture I Could Tell That The Hairs Especially Those Along The Belly Were Particularly Long. My Friend Says That This Was Considered A "long Haired Rottie"? Has Anyone Else Ever Seen One? Are These Dogs Pure Bred? Or Is The Long Hair A Result Of Another Breed Somewhere In The Line?

Sure, one of our members here has one. I think there's a nice picture of him on her web site at http://www.raw-dogs.com/author.html

Re: Long Hair Rottie?

There are a couple of members that have long haired Rottweilers. It is caused by a recessive gene and occasionally pops up in litters. Needless to say, it is considered a serious fault and Rotts with long hair should not be bred.

Sorry, but that is not necessarily true. The long hair I bred looked just like the other puppies in the litter until he was about 12 weeks old and started looking fuzzy, even then we were not sure if he would be a long hair or not as I have had other puppies with fuzzy coats that turned out perfectly normal once they shed out the puppy coat.

Re: Long Hair Rottie?

Long hair is an undesirable genetic trait. Don't let someone con you into thinking that a long haired rottweiler is a rare type of rottweiler and charge you a ton extra for it.

I must say, Cooper is a great dog and fabulous to look at.

Re: Long Hair Rottie?

There were two long haired pups in Cooper's litter, the breeder didn't notice anything amiss with their coats until they were about 5 weeks old. When the litter was evaluated at 8 weeks; the woman doing it said a sure sign was longer hair on the ears than anywhere else.

Re: Long Hair Rottie?

I have a long haired rott as well.... He is purebred, but has the recessive gene...

I like having the long hair, because of the reactions that it gets... Ive had everything from people saying it isnt a rott, and im a liar, to idiots saying "Yeah, my cousin's best friend's brother's uncle has one of those long haired "rockweilers", but its bigger than that one. I weighs about 200 pounds.."

This picture shows his long hair.. He looks in poor condition here, but it was the first day I had him... He has since filled out, and his coat looks sooo much better, and acts soo much better...

Re: Long Hair Rottie?

We had a long coated male in our second litter. You couldn't really tell until he was 6 weeks old. Froli's first litter, which was more tightly linebred than the second litter (with the coated pup), had no long coats. You never know when it will pop up. The coated pups tend to have incredible bone and gorgeous heads. :)

O, you can say that again!!! Blue Male, aka "Czar" was one of the pups that everyone loved when they came to see him. :)

Re: Long Hair Rottie?

Is it a possibility that the long hair and the temperment are connected? I have gotten a couple of compliments that Duke is the best behaved Rott they have ever seen...

Is it possible that the temperment and the long hair are somehow connected in the genes?

Oh how I can second that one!! Carol's Alex is not only gorgeous, but what a charmer! So they can't go in the show ring, but Alex is a great example of what they can do in OB!

JoJo
