Question for Single Rottie Moms

Maybe I have too much time on my hands today, but...

I am going through the approval process to adopt a rescue Rottie. I have done a lot of preparation and one of the things I did was finding out where there is 24 Hour Emergency Vet service and how to drive there.

Then it came to me...what if the dog can't walk? I cannot lift a 100lb dog....

I do have several friends who live close, but what happens if they aren't around?

If I called the police, would they help? Has anything like this ever happened to you?

Am I being an idiot? :)

Re: Question for Single Rottie Moms

This has never happened to me, but if it DID, I have a 1x8 piece of wood in the garage, I would wrap the dog in a thick towel or bath mat to not BURN the dog...........and drag the dog to the car with the 1x8 as a RAMP into the back seat.

Other than that.........you'd have to find your MOM IN DISTRESS strength!

You know.............the power that comes over a woman that enables them to LIFT THE CAR to get their trapped child out!!!

Oh thank you! I bet the adrenaline would take over and give us super human strength! But it is nice to have a plan in place for peace of mind.

I feel better now, thanks!

Re: Question for Single Rottie Moms

It takes a really good mom to be thinking of something like this so early. But don't think lift and carry, think wrap and drag...gently, of course. Sophies mom is a quick thinker. To get to the car or into the vet's office, if there's no one to help, use the board as a drag type gurney. Wrapped dog on gurney and drag the whole thing.

Is there a particular dog you are interested in? One you heard about or saw? Male...female...tell us! I'm dying to know more.

Yes!!!! There is! I haven't posted about it because I didn't want to "jinx" myself!

It is Zeus at TRC! I had my phone interview and now they are checking my references and hopefully I will have my home visit soon.

But even if Zeus gets adopted before my approval, I am so darn excited! I know there is a perfect Rottie buddy out there waiting for me. I went to PetSmart on Saturday to check out the crates (I would have bought one then and there but my car is too small!) and the training they offer. I am even buying a new car later in the year for my Rottie. A nice big SUV in red!

I am a Firefighter/EMT, and I can tell you that if you call us, we will come help you.. If you called demanding that we come do it, we more than likely wont... and of course if you abuse the privlage, it wont last long..

So, more than likely, me calling and stating, "Get your butts down here and do what my tax dollars are paying you to do!!!" wouldn't help my case?!?! :D :p ;)

Lol... we have had calls like that.. The standard reply is... "Tax dollars dont pay for a taxi service..."

The best one was when we had taken a heart attack victim in, and went right in ER... A lady was complaining that she was there first... The ER staff explained the Ambulance gets first treatment so we can be freed up for other runs... About 20 minutes later we get a call from ACROSS THE STREET from the hospital that someone passed out in the store.. We get there, and sure enough its her.. A sternal rub revieled she was faking.. We took her back to ER, the nurses put her butt in the waiting room, and made her wait.. AND she got a 2000 dollar bill from us that insurance wouldnt cover for her!!

Re: Question for Single Rottie Moms

Sometimes a vet will come to you. A Dog was hiton my road one day when my SO wasn't home. It was a larger dog that I couldn't lift. someone driving by helped get the dog off the road then I called my vet. He came out in a company car and picked the dog up and then found the owners.

Being single shouldn't mean you don't have friends and neighbors. If you have not made friends of your neighbors, do so. They are important in many ways.

Re: Question for Single Rottie Moms

I actually brought my rottie home while he was still pretty sedated after having his paw pads sutured.... I thought my husband was home to help me bring him in, but he wasn't. I did exactly what Sophie's Mom did with the blanket, then sat with him while we waited for my husband to come home.... after that we took two broom handles, folded them over a blanket, and put him on the blanket to bring him up the stairs.... he kind of looked like a drunk king up on his perch, but it did the job. You could also use a sled to pull him. if you didn't have the blanket....

Re: Question for Single Rottie Moms

I have a question that has bothered me for awhile. I am single and live with 4 Rotts. I am not getting younger unfortunately and having been sick over the Holidays got me thinking about what would happen if I got really sick and had to call 911. How would they get in my house with my dogs? Anyone with a plan please share.

Re: Question for Single Rottie Moms

I figure if I am able to get to the phone to call 911, I can get to a door and put the dogs behind it. I also have my neighbors phone number programed into my phone and they would show up and manage the dogs if not haul my butt to the hospital themselves.
