Re: Exercise Question

LOL...now that I re-read that, for some reason I got stuck on the mountains and fells and pictured her hiking rough terrain with the dog. Still no biking/joggin/roadwork, but walking should be fine. Be sure to take frequent breaks and bring water! :) Make sure the water is outdoor temp and not ice cold. Walking is still exercise and its a very bad idea to give a dog ice cold water right during/after exercise....people too.

Also watch the outside temperature and your dog...just because you are not hot does not mean that they are not.

Re: Exercise Question

Rottweilers are pretty hardy dogs. Provided there is no sturctural deficiency or injury, a six month old should be able to handle an hour and a half walk. You can alway add a few nice breaks if you like.

Sounds like you're out having fun and have some pretty wonderful places to walk. You and I are fortunate to have such nice places to take our dogs. Do you also have a variety of surfaces? Grass and dirt are more forgiving than pavement, but you walk where you can. ;)

Re: Exercise Question

Hi,

Teazle was spayed this weekend so I am sorry for not responding earlier.

Samantha, much as I would like to be on the mountains, at the moment I just point to them and tell her..."one day" !!!!! :D When I go for these walks, they will be on the very lower slopes, or through woods and forests. She won't be mountaineering just yet. I will be careful about the temperature of the water she drinks.

Sabellesmom, yes we are so lucky aren't we. I tried to describe in an earlier post the type of terrain we walk on. Although we can't avoid pavements, much of it is hard pressed hillside worn down by boots and sheep. Some of them are old miners and quarry tracks, or man made tracks to prevent erosion like crushed slate. There are forest tracks and woodland walks and lakeside tracks..in fact there is such a variety including pure grass !!! If anyone is planning to come to England I will be happy to share this beautiful part of the country with them and we can talk rottie at the same time.

In a couple of weeks when she has fully recovered from her spay (although she thinks she has recovered now !!!) then I will try a 1 1/2 hour walk bearing in mind what everyone has said. I will keep it at her pace and we will have plenty of rests where we can just sit and put the world to right.

Thank you all for your advice. :)
