Help with Sanitary Belt

I have a 7 year old Rottie (Gypsy) that just went into season last night. Since I adopted her 8 months ago I didn't think about what to do in regards to a Sanitary Belt for her as she has a docked tail. I have always had either male dogs, or ones with tails (Shepards and Huskies).

I have tried and tried to get this belt to work but since she has no tail to slip through the hole, it falls off as soon as she stands, moves, or even raises her eyebrows.

Does anyone have any advice? Currently I've strapped one of my belts with tons of eyeholes around her waist and attached the sanitary belt to that, but there has to be an easier way for her.

Re: Help with Sanitary Belt

how about an old pair of tightie whities with a sanitary napkin attached?

I don't know what belt you speak of, I must go find a picture of one.

Is there a reason why you are not spaying her?

Re: Help with Sanitary Belt

My experience is that you will never get it to stay on all the time, it will come off sooner or later. I had one that I got from petsmart that worked fairly well. It was made of lycra with an elastic band. It wasn't perfect, we just had to keep an eye on her to make sure it was still on from time to time.

When we scheduled her to be spayed she ended up really sick and we had to cancel. now they want to wait till she's out of season. she's seven but we adopted her from someone else. so it's in her future to be fixed soon as we can.

Re: Help with Sanitary Belt

We used the SMALL velcro pants on Sophie. The ones that look like diaper covers. Her waist is SO TINY, everything else fell off!!

Did you get a pic of that belt yet?

:D

Re: Help with Sanitary Belt

What has worked for me in the past with the foster dogs (that are never spayed and always end up coming into heat before I can get them to the vet .. ) is a pair of mens medium bikini underwear .. put them on backwards and with a light day napkin.

Just remember to take them off when you go outside and if you get them mixed up in the laundry you might have some explaining to do! :D

Cool. I was just wondering. It seems like a lot of hassle to have a dog in heat to me. I've never had one. Glad she's feeling better. :)

Found them! We bought the extra large and they still don't fit. She's put on a *few* pounds during the winter. :p

Re: Help with Sanitary Belt

Please also remember to take them off often and let her lick herself clean and keep air flowing. Lots of nasty infections can happen when the cover ups are left on too long.

good point! I'll have to keep that in mind! That and the "Anti-Mating Spray". We have quite a few people who let their dogs roam the neighborhood, so I've been going out with her to prevent any unwanted mating from occuring.

Re: Help with Sanitary Belt

We crate our girls or keep them in the kitchen the bulk of the time they are in season so that they get plenty of air to tohse parts, but for livingroom time and at work time mine wear Joybies pants that have suspenders. Nothing else works as good as these or stay on as well! http://www.joybies.com

Re: Help with Sanitary Belt

The joybies look like they would work. I don't crate my dog so that isn't an option. I do have her isolated onto an old chair that is "hers" with a blanket beneath her, but I don't want to put her in a crate.
