| Re: thinking about getting a 16 month male? Three young dogs is too many, in my opinion. Finish raising the one you have now, when she's in the 3-4 year range and is well-trained and well-socialized (and assuming your mother does the same with her shepherd), THEN it may be time to think of another one.

| Re: thinking about getting a 16 month male? I agree with Spidey. Take the one you have now to the top and make a wonderful example of the breed out of her. THEN think about getting another. Good Luck!

| Re: thinking about getting a 16 month male? I would wait if I were you. I made the mistake of having to many young dogs in the house. Currently I have two male puppies that are 9 and 10 weeks old. I also have a 9 1/2 month old female. My female went from being well behaved (not chewing, listening well, etc) back to the new puppy stage. She thinks she is 9 week old all over again. Also with even two young dogs it seems like you have 10. I don't have time for anything right now. I can't even wash dishes right now without having to stop to either get something from a puppy or to take a puppy outside. I am rehoming at least one puppy maybe both. At first I was disappointed but now I'm looking forward to the break. I wish I had just kept taking my 9 month old to play groups and kept her as an only dog. We are going back to obedience school and I would eventually like to search and rescue with her. I bought another puppy because I thought my girl really wanted someone to play with and my SO wanted his own dog. However my SO is hardly home and I have realized that Daphne liked being the only dog more. She isn't to happy about sharing her car rides with the boys or anything else that used to be just us. So I am seriusly thinking about letting both boys go. I still want to do more with Daphne and want to start college shortly and doubt I will have the time two will need. |

I agree with Spidey, Anytime you have numerous dogs with such strong will, and fight tendencies. as much as you set up every safe guard possible. the unfortunate will happen. And the age of that male, and the German shepard I see a serious dominance fight for alpha, and territory happening. And having one of your dogs getting hurt in a fight is heartbreaking. We have 4 Alpha females and trust me I have safe guards and constantly cautious. Just encountered a situation myself of dominance. They all could play together but all of a sudden unexpected. It changed. And you won't know when that will be. And they no longer can be together at all. They use to play well together. But my younger just walking into the runs decided to challenge one of my older girls. And let me tell you. That is nothing you ever want to deal with. I got them seperated but not without getting bit myself couldn't even tell you which one got me it happened so fast. But will be buying a supersoaker this summer. They were where I did not have hose reach! That always works! Neither one wanted to hurt me. As soon as I yelled out they both stopped. But its just something to avoid if you can. Mine are both top sweet girls. But Alpha's. Actually kind of embarrassed telling that story! So Take what you got to the top. You really have to be able to facilitate well to bring in more. Will be busy building cement runs this spring myself!!!!! The one older one is a huidini! |

| Re: thinking about getting a 16 month male? Another thing to consider is where will you be in 5 or 10 years. More than likely your dogs will still be alive and you could have small children, be married have a job that requires longer hours. This is one thing I completely overlooked when buying another puppy. I hope to have children of my own in 5 years and be a paralegal. With That in mind that already cuts down the time I will have with my future Husband and kids let alone 2 or 3 dogs. I suggest if you want to help more Rottweilers to either call local shelters or rescues and volunteer your time to do things such as take the dogs for walks, etc or sponsor a Rottweiler from a local Rescue. ;) I really wish I had done that instead. |

| Re: thinking about getting a 16 month male? I have multiple dogs. Even as an experienced dog/Rottweiler person and while ours are a bit spaced out in age (although 3 are young) and with a proper schedule and the help of my spouse, it is still not without challenges as we both work full-time. We have a potty schedule, a feeding schedule. Certain dogs can only be out with others and you dang well better be sure that you do not get it mixed up. We rely heavily on crates and rotating dogs in and out....someday when we buy a bigger property we will build kennels with big runs and a play yard. There are regimented walk/exercise periods for each dog and that is not even counting training time. Everyone is on a schedule. Another thing to consider is safe transportation. Is your vehicle big enough to transport two dogs in crates/vari kennels? Sure you may be able to get away with the seatbelt restraint for one dog, but two? Dogs are like little kids that way and will mess with each other despite the restraints. Also, what if those dogs don't like each other? Then you will need a viable way to transport them both safely protected from road hazards and each other. We just ended up buying a dog trailer to transport our dogs because I cannot fot four crates in my vihicle. As would most breeders/show/Schutzhund people on this forum, I would not recommend a multiple dog environment for people new to the breed or for anyone that is not very dog experienced in general. I would never recommend getting a another dog to keep your existing dog company. And I would strongly recommend spacing your dogs apart at least 1.5 to 2 years to give you a chance to solidly OB train your first young dog. HTH! :) |
