Re: Bark

Well I can't give you a scientific answer, but with my older dog, the bark he had at around 6-7 months still sounds like the one he has at 1.5 years

Re: Bark

Romeo has never been a barker, we adopted him at about 10 weeks old and I think we had him about a month and a half before he ever barked.

He is about 7 months old and he has a deep bark, alternating with a deep growl when he feels there is danger. Like when he sees a coyote in the back yard, or yesterday when I had the kitchen window cracked open and the drape would occasionally flutter.

If he barks during play time or when someone comes to the door, it isn't a deep bark nor is it a puppy bark. The yappie little white dog across the street has what I call a yappy dog bark or a big dog puppy bark.

This morning though, our daughter Elizabeth was eating a bagle for breakfast and Romeo decided to beg (BAD BOY) he did the puppy bark. Liz and I just looked at each other and laughed.

Maybe your angel just has a tone of bark depending on the situation like Romeo does?

Re: Bark

My male also developed a deeper bark around 6-7 months. My female is 4 years old so I don't know about a puppy bark with her - except she is real throaty almost like she's had a throat injury. I got her from the HS in December so I don't know her history.

Re: Bark

Tank developed what we refer to as his 'big boy' bark at around 6-7 months also...in fact the first time he let out a big deep bark I think he even surprised himself.....he's 10 months old now, but it depends on the situation, and why he's barking. He has different barks of different pitches depending on how serious he is.
If he's annoyed at something....he'll still yap with what we refer to as his whiney little b*** bark, not to be sexist or anything.... and tell him to knock it off and bark like a real dog.

Re: Bark

Ah... you think its a big boy bark at 6 or 7 months! ;) Just wait until they hit 2.5 to 3 and their chest has finished expanding. The timbre will get deeper as that happens! :)

Re: Bark

Yikes Samantha... He already shakes the walls!!!! But I can see what you mean because it has deepened just over the past few months.
He's my first rottie (always had labs, who tend to kind of 'yap' anyway, and they were all females...) and the other dog is a male, but he's a GSD/we don't know what mix and Tank has a much deeper timbre to his 'big boy bark'.

Re: Bark

Luca has had a deep bark as long as I can remember. We use to laugh at him because he was this little pup and if you heard it from behind a door you would think a full grown dog was sitting on the other side! I think it's like everything else in a dog, they all develop on their own pace.

That's not the question at hand, read Samanthac reply thats the answer to my question. thanks for replying though. The vocal with change because the chest will mature which in turn changes the sound of the bark . Thanks to Samanthac I now can reply to my own thread :D

Sorry Los, I was just trying to get across that I believed it was issue of maturing and that it would most likely be different depending on how fast each dog develops. I always thought the deepness of voice or bark was determined by the development of the vocal chords. For example, I knew a person once who had a rescued small breed dog that was once strangled and thus his vocal chords were damaged. He had a very deep bark despite having a very little chest.
