Weight ?

Hi all,
Went to the vet today,He weighed my little land shark, and at 4 months old he is 37 lbs.He said he looked fine and not underfed or thin. The vet then told me that when a dog reaches 4 months old they take his weight and double it,and that is how much he will end up weighing.Does that sound correct? If paws are still an indication of how big a dog will be then this vet is in for a big surprise :)

Re: Weight ?

Well, my boy is 4 years old and is weighing in at 85 pounds. However, he is a german shepard rott mix. He looks so funny cause he has a root head, but at 85 pounds he definately looks over weight so we assume he has a physique of a german shepard, so he is on a diet. As for a vet comment of doubling the weight, I have never heard of this but that doesn't mean it isn't true. Just enjoy and love every bit of him, and if he doesn't end up weighing as much, don't worry. Consider yourself lucky because that is less weight you have to worry about dragging to something you know he hates but has to do (mine hates baths)...hehe

Re: Weight ?

I have heard of the 4-5 month half-weight measure. If this is true my dog will weigh in at 100lb. Considering her dame and sire, this sounds about right.
The people who started in puppy class with me and my girl are watching our dogs for accuracy on this prediction. it has been 6m.....5 to go.

Re: Weight ?

Julius actually weighed 36 lbs. at 4 months of age. He is now 15 months old & weighs in at right around 95 lbs. Off the top of my head I'm not really remembering what he weighed the last time we were at the vets but I think it was right around 92-95 lbs.

So if we doubled 36 lbs. we would end up with 72 lbs. which Julius certainly is not. The rule might work for some dogs...but probably not all....at least in Julius' case.

:)

Re: Weight ?

I have never heard of a rott weighing double of what it weighs at 4 months. It might work for a small breed dog, but I can't believe it would work for a large breed dog. Misty was 35 pounds, she is at 85 pounds. Another dog I had was 40 pounds and at 9 months was 90 pounds. Duncan was just over 40 pounds and he is 107-110 pounds as an adult. Fizbin was also right at 40 pounds at 4 months and he is at 120 pounds at 2 1/2 years old. None of my dogs could be considered over weight.

Re: Weight ?

I've heard of that formula...maybe it's more true of smaller dogs?
Cooper was right around 40lbs at 4 months. He matured at about 95lbs.

Re: Weight ?

Maybe 4 m is too young, I would think that 5m is more accurate. Angel is 92lb @ 9m she was 52lb @ 5m. Besides, I think it is supposed to be a rough estimate not dead on.
