question about jolly ball toys

we bought maverick one of those large jolly balls that you fill with sand or water. it doesn't have the handle tho, it's just a hard plastic ball about the side of a basketball. anyway, we let maverick play with it w/o filling it with anything. he'd get that thing rolling so fast we were worried it would break the fence or worse... a window (our family room is half underground so the windows are at ground level). we decided to fill it with sand and now that thing weighs quite a bit. it amazes me how maverick can move that thing around, esp. not that there's snow on the ground. at first i thought it would be good exercise for his neck muscles, but now i'm wondering if it's too heavy for him. am i just being a worry wart? does anyone else have one of these and have them filled? thanks.

Re: question about jolly ball toys

I got two for Ben from a friend of mine. One is empty and the other has water (OK, now it's ice) in it - probably only about 1/4 filled, if that.

He loves those things and I can get work done in the garden without wondering what he's doing - he barks his fool head off at that thing unless he's rolling it all over the backyard!

wow. we filled ours up almost all the way with sand. maybe i should take the sand out and put water (but not fill it completely) in it instead.

Re: question about jolly ball toys

We do not have one of the hard plastic Jolly Balls. We got the Tug N Toss Jolly Ball which is meant for horses but also made for dogs. It's more of a soft rubber (which Julius needs to be supervised with) but he loves it to death. He always gets his butt a wigglin' when he sees us get it out of the car. He KNOWS then that we're going to the baseball field for some fun. :)

About your question....I would probably fill it about halfway with sand or water. When we take Julius on hikes he always insists on picking up these ENORMOUS logs & carries them up & down the mountain. I worry that it might now be good for him but he's romping up & down the trail like it's no problem at all. In my opinion I wouldn't worry about it being too much if you just fill it up half way with sand or water.....

:)

Re: question about jolly ball toys

i was thinking about getting one of the one's with the handles because maverick loves to throw things around. whenever i'm in the pet store and walk past them, i always contemplate getting one... but i haven't yet. :)

luckly, maverick is not able to pick the ball up with his teeth (although there are some pretty good gashes in the side where he's tried). it amazes me how he pushes it around with the side if his face. he was cracking me up this morning because he kept growling at it as he pushed it. i think i'll go ahead and empty out some of the sand just to be on the safe side.

thanks. :)

Re: question about jolly ball toys

Just a tip....(which I've mentioned in another Jolly Ball thread awhile ago...), if possible ask for the horse Jolly Ball or order that one if possible. We had a large horse Jolly Ball (which was the same size as the largest dog Jolly Ball) ordered into our local pet store & it was about 8 bucks cheaper than the same size dog Jolly Ball. So it is worth looking into....

:)

Re: question about jolly ball toys

I bought Akasha one of the hard Jolly Balls and she LOVES it! She rolls that ball all over the yard. She uses her feet and her nose to roll it around. She will play with it for a very long time. I have never put anything inside of it tho. Maybe I will try that this summer.

I am going to order a couple of the horse ones for the dogs and horses. My filly loves her jolly ball as much as Akasha loves hers. The only thing is, the one that Dameerah has belongs to my daughters horse and she needs it back, to keep her occupied.

Re: question about jolly ball toys

I think those hard plastic balls are horrible for the dogs to play with. I've seen dogs/rottweilers bang up the front of the legs (from where they hit and push the ball around) pretty badly to where they have swelling and limps. I prefer the rubber jolly ball (although a bit less indestructible!)

Re: question about jolly ball toys

We have the Tug and Toss Jolly Balls for the girls and they are absolutely addicted to them. They are an outside toy for sure though, and the girls carry them around, throw them into the air, push them with their noses and roll them..when they roll the ball, the handle action drives them crazy ( the handle also makes the ball balance irradically..it's great fun to watch and they appear to have excellent play value and exercise value as well. **** stars toys!

Re: question about jolly ball toys

Make sure they don't play with it for too long. My 3 year old had a big swollen lump on one of her ankles and now has calcium deposits on her biceps muscle from an injury... the only thing I can attribute it to is playing so hard with the unfilled jolly ball.

Re: question about jolly ball toys

after reading this post i went out to the pet store and bought a 8inch jolly ball with the handle for my rott. I asked the store manager if she thought they were strong and not easily chewed up... she said they were strong but couldnt garuntee a dog not chewing it all up.... WELL needless to say but i bought the new TOY for 22bucks gave it to chyna and she ate the handle off in about 22 minutes.... anyone elses rott eat the handle off... It looked like it wouldve been a fun toy to play with outside but now it looks like a bowling ball for someone with no thumb!!!!!!

Re: question about jolly ball toys

I guarantee that Julius, if left alone outside would also bite the handle off of his Jolly Ball. He has the soft rubber Jolly Ball but I know that he would also enjoy biting the handle off of the hard plastic one also. He only gets his Jolly Ball when we're going to the baseball field to play for a bit. It's holding up very well. He got it about 4 months ago for his one year birthday & it has some teeth marks in it but no holes.

Big Dog---Was you dog playing with the ball by herself? Or did she do this during a game of fetch??

:)

Re: question about jolly ball toys

Jaegergirl, we have the same jolly ball and we don't put water or sand in ours, because we keep it in the swimming pool (in ground) for our Pit Bull. Jake avoids the swimming pool like the plague, but Chance swims every opportunity that he can, and pushes that ball around and around and around the pool (kidney bean shaped pool). The water temp is about 58 degrees right now, and if I don't block the steps, he will swim everytime I let him outside. Goofy dog - but when the ball is out of the pool, my sons call it his "frustration ball" because he gets so mad because he can't get his mouth around it and destroy it. We actually bought it at a flea market bird stand, it was $3! The best three bucks we've spent in a LONG time. Excellent toy for the pit - but the rottie could care less, as well as the dotted dogs......

P.S. - Even though all our dogs swim, we never leave them outside without supervision - all dogs can drown, even if you believe they could swim and get out in your absence!
