Eating his Poo

For lack of a better term that is exactly what Dante is doing, it is driving me crazy. I think that it might have something to do with the fact that it is frozen, kinda like a treat but he is driving me nuts with this. It is going to come down to going out everytime he does #2 in the yard and cleaning it.
Are there other dogs out there doing this?

Re: Eating his Poo

Storm and Dakota both did this until they where both about 2. I heard it was because their food wasn't digested enough so there was still nutriants in it. They did out grow it and yes picking up after them was our only solution.

Re: Eating his Poo

It is so gross, my wife is a vet tech and said that basically it is just there left over food nutrients, but it is horrible, and then he tries to lick you after. Yeah right eh! I cant wait till spring when he wont think he is getting poopsicles!

Re: Eating his Poo

What kind of food are you feeding your dog? Maybe you should switch your dog to a food that is more easily digestable so your dog won't be passing as many "nutrients" out with stool and wanting to eat it afterwards.

Re: Eating his Poo

You can buy a product called 'Deter' and put it in /on their food and it is supposed to deter them from eating their feces. I did the other simple trick - sprinkled meat tenderizer on Ben's food (Accent - monosodium glutomate). He stopped after a week - but I had to be super vigilant and scoop the poop just to be sure he would not do it again later in the day. You can also talk to the vet about a product called ForBid.

I did a search on 'eating feces' and "coprophagia" and found the following links:
Google search results (eating feces)

Google Search Results - Coprophagia

The second link has a link to a 'right wing' type of 'tirade' about the crap fed to the USA by journalists - it's pretty odd but NOT related to dogs eating poop!

Re: Eating his Poo

We feed Dante a food called PD (perscription diet) it is straight from the vets, the only way we can afford it is the discount we get as my wife is a vet tech and gets it from vet purchasing at a good price.

So the its not the food, and he only does it when frozen, so I am guessing the he views it as a treat. But maybe I will try that product to stop him.

I will let you know

Re: Eating his Poo

If you clean it up after he goes then there won't be anything for him to eat and that will stop him for sure. I know it sounds simple but it really works. ;)

Re: Eating his Poo

Well i understand that.........but we dont always have to time to run right outside and pick up after him, we clean it up everynight but he goes more than once a day.

If we just removed every temptation that Dante had in this house there would be nothing left, so I was just trying to get info on training through the problem.

Re: Eating his Poo

Well if you don't have time to clean it up then you won't have the time to train him not to do it. In order to train him not to do it you would need to be with him when he attempts to eat it so that you can correct him. If you are able to be there to train him then you would be able to be there to clean it up. There are no magic training words or technique that will stop this without your actual presence and if you are there anyway.........
