I Lost One :(

Ever since I registered my kennel name with ARV, I get quite a few calls re: puppies. Not being even close to beginning to breed my own dogs any time soon (if ever), I have been helping these people to find reputable breeders. So far, I have helped to steer 4 people to good breeders....the 4th is signing a contract today!

But I lost a 5th one to a mill. I called the lady right back. She didn't call me back until a week later to let me know that she was very pleased with her purchase of a female from a certain kennel that specialize in 'big dogs', meaning oversize. Thay raise Bavarian Bear Rottweilers and Superior Size Dobermans. :( I know its not my fault, but I have been really sad about it.

This lady was so happy with her purchase and I was so sad that I did not know what to say other than good luck with her pup and to call me if she did need anything. I did sucessfully manage to talk her out of getting another (which makes me wonder if they have ideas of breeding). She told me that she would rather wait until the new pup was trained and much older but that hubby was looking to get another.

Steven felt that I should have told her the truth about where she got her dog from and it was wrong not to. My point of view was that she already had the dog and nothing I could say would change that. But now I am wondering if I should have called her back and told her the truth.

He says I should make up and info packet and send it out to these people when they call and include a list of unreputable breeders. But if I name names in wiriting I could get sued.

I still have her number...what do you think?

First let me say Thanks! for helping out those other four puppy buyers you steered clear of BYB and puppy mills.

It certainly is disheartening to have someone disregard good info and still pursue a puppy mill or pet store puppy. I do think listing "unreputable breeders" could get you in some trouble. I might instead point out ways to recognize puppy mill puppies, or BYB breeders. By listing common red flags and the characteristics of BYB/mills you might be able to get most of your points across without actually naming names.

Either way good luck with your efforts. It's great to see someone stepping up to help out our breed and it's reputation.

Samantha, I don't think there is any more you could have done - people will do what they're going to do. Perhaps it was a money thing, who knows. But your efforts are certainly commendable and I have to thank you for the help you gave me!

If you ever start breeding, let me know!:D

Hi Samantha

I think you are providing an excellent service by extending yourself in assisting people to find the right breeder! I like Dawn's idea. An alternative is to steer them to a few websites like ARC that have guidelines in choosing a breeder as well as breeder listings.

I agree Samantha. I think that you are doing people a wonderful service by helping them to find a reputable breeder.

I talked to my cousin last Christmas about getting a dog from reputable breeder or even rescuing. I even told her many of the red flags that should go up when looking. In the end she got her black Lab puppy from a BYB & I talked blue in the face & it didn't help. Some people just need the puppy RIGHT THIS MINUTE & just don't have the patience to wait. It's sad but true. Bless you for helping the people who will listen though.

I'm not sure if I would call the woman back or not. I agree with what you said. She already has the puppy but I might, like you said, send a packet with a note saying, "If you or your husband is looking for another pup soon here are some things you should watch out for...." It would get your message across....

:)

You might want to include an explanation of WHY it's important not to buy a BYB dog from the perspective of someone who doesn't care about the dog overpopulation problem. Health, temperment, behavioral problems that can result from thoughtless breeding and the bills that result from these problems. If you can't appeal to their emotions appeal to their common sense and their walet.

Samantha,
I think it is WONDERFUL that you take the time to try and help these people! Even though this lady went ahead and got a puppy from a less than reputable breeder, at least you were able to help steer several others in the right direction!

I agree with Brooke about sending her an info packet. Maybe if they see what to look for in black and white they will pay more attention. Although I do think that sometimes people are in too big of a hurry and are willing to take whatever they can get. I really hope these people are not planning on doing any breeding. That is a VERY scary thought!

Thank you for taking the time to help these people and give them the info to make the right choice:)

What exactly is a Bavarian Bear Rottweiler, anyway.

I agree, you should send her the info packet anyway. Maybe when they see what kind of health risks their dog runs by being bred improperly, the will think twice before purchasing from that "kennel" again.

You can only do so much and unfortunatly you can not make the final decision for people. You are doing a great job!

Ditto!!!

That is really good that you are helping these people. Send that lady a info packet to help her with her next one. (She did say that hubby wanted another one) then call her (after that was sent and it got there) and see where they stand on getting another one. Good luck!

Its their way of saying that they breed grossly oversized, horribly structured, out of standard Rottweilers. Plus the woman is a loon...I have spoken to her once and that was enough. She had taken someone else's picture off their website of a very nice dog and tried to pass it off with several other pictures of her dog. It was SO obvious who the dog was and that it was not the same dog as in the other pictures. I told her I was alerting the owner of the dog whose picture she was using. She cursed me out and said I didn't know what the hell I was talking about, but the picture came down almost immediately. Turns out I was wrong about whose dog it was, but right about the fact that it was not hers.

If anyone wants the link to the site, pm me and I will send it to you so you can see Big Bavarian Bear Rottweilers and Superior Size Dobermans for yourself.

Well Samanthac, I love my little guy and wouldn't change him for anything but I wish I would have known about you before we got him. I live in Lancaster and would have taken any advice someone is willing to give. If we ever get a second baby I will be getting in touch. Thanks for the service you do!
