Raw diet prices wow

I was looking around and found someone who would supply me with some raw diet products.

2 variety packs(25 pound per pack).(chicken/beef/turkey/lamb/mixed with bones/veggies) 63.59 x 2
30 pound case turkey necks 23.50

151.40 total per month

and she would eat 2 lbs. day so I was told it should last me about 1 month?? WOW
I never new it would be that expensive.
Any help or input.. I`m having an overload. I guess I might be better of buying canidea.. I did not know I would be digging that deep in my wallet.

:(
BTW: she is over 4 month old 43 pounds right now on kibble

I think you just need to change what you are buying. I have three big dogs and don't spend much more than that. Feeding mostly chicken leg quarters at 3.90 for ten pounds. I am having to go to the store several times a week, as our freezer went kaput. Will have to wait until the first of the year to get a new one. Also with the holidays coming round the corner, turkey is very cheap. I bought one and cut it up for my three and still have meat and bone left for someone tonight.

Yikes!
If you live in SoCa, I believe there is a coop you can go through - PM me & I can give you a resource to find it.

When I fed four dogs (total combined weight about 350lbs) I found if I didn't get pricey stuff like rabbit, I could do it for about $80.00 a month buying mostly wholesale.

It sounds like you are getting prices from a commercial raw dealer like Steves or Raw4Dogs...? They can be quite expensive.

Hey check your PMs I just sent you some info. :)

It scares me too, but I'm not prepared to start doing my own, so I feel like I'm having great success in feeding a mishmash of things. I use at least two kinds of kibble, several brands of canned, a couple of brands of prepared raw, and some home prep.

If I were in your shoes, I might try a combination of kibble, and prepared raw, and maybe hamburger. Perhaps kibble and some burger for breakfast, and then raw at night? That would automatically cut that price tag in half.

Thanks for your input. Yeah it is a bit intimitating.
I tried the chicken in the morning and lunch and kibble at night. for a few days. Still have the runnins. chicken with bones without skin.. She does good with ground turkey.

A week or so ago I tried feeding chicken without skin and bone mixed with kibble also the runnins.

So I figured I`ll just do cold turkey switch see how it goes for a month or so. And than see. Since by then she should have gained another 10 pounds or so and if it does not work I will switch back. She loves the meat but I`m a bit worried I might not give her enough that`s why I was looking for a supplier of meats.

But these prices are WOW. I was not sure if that was the norm but as far as the posts go it does not look like it especially if you buy it yourself. I just need to be more confident in what to get , where and how much. The last thing I wanna do is not give her enough.

Like Carina has mentioned we have a wonderful co-op in Southern Cal (I don't think Lemon Grove is down here though). We also supply to a couple places in Northen California (once per month) and the prices are GREAT. We process easily over 20,000 lbs per month. Check out our site www.socalbarf.com and see if you can take advantage of the resource... There are a couple coops in NoCal as well (Freemont is a name that comes to mind).

Thank you for your post. I did see the site already but you can not order until december. And I was unable to look at the prices as well. I think I saw someone in San diego doing some pick ups but I have not e-mailed her. I`m a bit east of San Diego about 30 min from down town San diego... :)

I don't think you would be feeding 2 pounds of food per day unless you want to fatten up a dog or the majority of it is bone.

I feed a combination of Steve's Real Food and fresh raw foods that I buy at my regular grocery store and I'm not spending that much to feed one dog. I think you need to see what's available in your area and go with that.

Everything that I've read says that you should feed 2% of the dogs weight...give or take a bit.

I would just shop around online & see if you can find numbers to poultry processors & other sources. It took A LOT of calling around until I found cheap places from which to get the meat. Now if only I could find a place to get cheap beef heart...

:)

Ok that is kinda off the original post but I was told 2% of her grown weight per day or around 7% of her weight now since she is a puppy. I guessed her to be between 90 pounds- 100 pounds that would be about 1.8 pounds.- 2 pounds????

Man there I`m going into the overload again.. ;)

I actually found some decent priced chicken quaters on Monday night. 10lb. for 5.50....

OOhhh, I didn't factor in that she's a puppy. Hmmmm, well I didn't really focus in on the puppy part of the books that I've read. But I'll check when I get home. Maybe Carina will chime in before then...

:D

I hope this isn't off topic, but when you're going raw, how old is "puppy"?

Oh, darn...I already messaged you my answer.

But really I was asking for *me*, since I'm thinking of switching Athena over as soon as the doctors say it's okay. :D
Athena's over 9 months, and I'm not sure how much longer I can call a 75 lb. creature "baby". :p
