Doggie Door/ANTI-Kitty Door

Hey All,
Now that Julius has his fence I have been thinking about a doggie door, not in the near future but it would be nice to have at some point. I would be able to say bye-bye to the old days of having to let him out every other hour! Anyways, my problem is Poof!, our kitty. Do you guys know of any doors that might be dog friendly yet hard if not impossible for cats to get open? I was thinking if one was heavy or thick enough it would be to hard for Poof! to open. Yes I have thought about Poof! trying to get out when Julius is comming in or going out, but I really doubt that he would try. He trys to keep a good distance from Julius most of the time, and any time somone comes in the door he speeds back to the bedroom until the door is shut. Any ideas??

Ryan, my last cat could open a heavy 20 year old sliding glass door with broken rollers, with only one claw.

We struggled to open that door but he did it with no problem. With Stuart in mind, Nope, there isn't a doggy door a cat can't beat.

Ok,
I guess I should explain Poof! a little futher in detail. He is not all about going in or out of rooms while others are in the door way, that includes inside the house and the doors that go outside. With the doors to outside, even if the screen door is unlatched with a good inch of space to push it open he won't try, he does however sit at the door thinking about it! I was also thinking about putting a electric line along the top of the kennel so he would not try to scale the fence, but I have not looked into it far enough to do it yet, and I am not sure how I feel about the idea. So I am basically looking for a strong heavy doggie door that the average cat could not open.

Put a roof on the kennel (chicken wire will do just fine) and let the dog door open to the kennel and either or both can go in or out.

There are doors that require a collar to be worn in order for them to open. Here is one on the Drs. Foster and Smith site Infra-Red Dog Door

Hmmm, I totally forgot about those. I'll have to show that link to Ryan. Thanks!

So I think I have a good idea of what I want to do. I like the idea of putting a roof on the kennel, it has now come to either a tarp like roof or a chain-link roof. I also am thinking of putting chicken wire around the top about two inches from the roof; that way if Poof! thought about it he would meet the chicken wire before he meets the roof.

As for the door if I can't find one I like I think I might try to build my own doggie door and frame it into a cheep storm door I will get from Lowes.

Wahooo!

There are dog doors that work with screen doors. I'm not sure how it is they work, if you look on the Fosters and Smith site you can see a pic of one.

Fosters and Smith offer a lot of dog doors. You should be able to find something that will suit your needs. Ours has a magnetic strip at the bottom and the cat has a pretty hard time trying to get it open but even then, if he's determined to go out he'll manage it. Your best bet is to cat-proof the kennel, then Poof will still be able to get some fresh air and not get "out".
