Geeze 110 lbs.----When can we expect it to slow down?

Hey All,
I was amazed to find out this weekend that our 11 month old Julius is 110lbs! As of now he is 27" at the shoulder, a little over the average height. What I was wondering is when you guys see slowing in a Rotties growth. Since we have gotten him he has put on average a good 10 lbs per month…he slowed down the past couple of months! Can we expect more weight since from here until three years of age it is said that they "fill out" and put on weight in the form of muscle mass. As far as the way he looks everyone says he looks extremely healthy and proportionate. His stomach curves up to his hind quarters as it is supposed to. We’re able to feel his ribs easily when touched & in the light you can see each individual muscle in his legs and all the bones in his rib-cage.

Let Me Know!

Lucky was 110lbs at 16 months when I got him and he has weighed within a few pounds of that weight his whole life, he is now 9 1/2. He did get more mature looking but the weight stayed the same.

My Mojo grew fast like that during his first year, he was #120 when he turned one and stayed there his whole life. Now Sajan has been growing much more slowly, he is 21 months old and is only #100. He weighed #90 from 9 months until about 6 weeks ago when he started to fill out. Different lines grow at different rates. I personally prefer the slower growing dogs, they have a better chance of no structural problems. Rapid growth can cause all kinds of problems. Mayeb Julius is one of the fast growers and will stop soon.

Some lines mature more quickly. If you have one of those then, don't expect much more, especially height.

If you have a slower maturing line then you could get as much as another inch as well as weight. Somehow, since you're writing has a bit of an "urgent tone," I doubt you have a slow maturing line.

What were his parents like?

Well,
It isn't like I woke up one day and I had a huge dog, he has grown at a steady rate since we got him at 9 weeks. He is allready larger then both Mom & Dad. I am not worried in any way, he had a check up two months ago and the vet said everything as sound, nothing abnormal with the knee caps, hips and so on. Although that was from physical inspection and not x-ray so we are not sure yet if he is clear of HD.

maverick seemed to have slowed down right around 12 months. matter of fact, i weighed him at 1 year (in april) and then went to the vet this august and he only gained 4 or 5 lbs. the breeder thought he'd end up being around 115-120 by the way he was growing before i bought him, but he's just 95 lbs which is fine with me. i know he's still growing but the vet said she didn't think he'd gain much more weight.

Julius sounds alot like Keil.
Keil is 27 1/2" and weighs 95 pounds. He needs to gain 5 - 10 pounds as he lost some weight while Akasha was in heat. He is very tall and lanky. I can't wait until he has filled out some.

Keil grew very fast and just recently started to really slow down. I noticed a change in his rapid growth when we switched him to the RAW. I don't know if it is just coincidence or if it helped him slow down. I have been told that they grow slower when they are fed RAW. I don't have enough experience with feeding the RAW to know if that is true or not, but it seemed to help with Keil. Although it very well could have been a coincidence as I mentioned.

Akasha stopped growing in height a while ago. She is the midget of the family at 23". That's ok though because she is a great height and is within the standard. She was the smallest puppy in her litter. If you compare Akasha to her brothers she is alot smaller. They may have gotten the height but she got the brains and is much more advanced in her training than the boys are;) :D :D

Hi Brooke, Czar started tapering off at around 12 months. Up until then I thought when is he going to stop gaining weight , but then he got sick and I was told he will never be what he could have been, muscle and bone structure. I think it affected his growth to a point. But now he's been maintaining 118-119 and is NOT allowed to go over that bc of his kidneys having to work too hard.

I would imagine every dog is different as far as how they grow and how much weight but lets face it they can't keep that rate up for too long:D. I would say between 12 and 18 months is when they should really slow down then after that they bulk up and look more mature.

I bet Julius is quite handsome. Give your sweet boy a hug from auntie Judy :D .

Hey Judy C. How is your boy? Can't wait to see the big man! I will answer for SamanthaC since she is training up in New York with the Raptor. I know Disel gains about 7 pounds per month and he now tips the scales at 86lbs after 9 months. Probably a medium size dog.:) ;)

Hey Steve! Yeah I talked to Samantha on the phone last night and she said she was going to NY and she also told me how much your little man weighs now . I guess he's gonna look a bit different when I see him . He's soooo handsome and that's one boy I can't wait to see when he's fully mature.

Czar is doing good now, we had a bit of a scare this weekend but all is well now:D . I would consider Czar a med. size dog too.

Hope to see you and Samantha soon, take care and don't get into trouble when she's away:D . Since the prince is away please give Athena a hug from auntie Judy. Take care Steve!

Judy

Well we actually took Julius to the vet yesterday for other issues but had him weighed & he only weighs right around 93 lbs. The household scale must be off.....

So he's not gaining weight THAT quickly & I'm much more pleased with that weight for his age than the 110 lbs. His dad is 110 lbs. so he might get up to that....

:p
