Crating: stunt a dog's growth?

Can crating a dog stunts it's growth?

also, any tips to keep a puppy from playfully biting us?he loves to chew on my arm and hand, in a playful manner, but I am trying desperately to break him of this.

If crating stunted a dog's growth, there would be a lot of stunted Rottweiler! No, it won't. Assuming he gets adequate exercise to build good muscles.

Do a search in behavior on "puppy biting." There's a gazillion threads - probably not one person here who hsn't gone through the puppy biting phase! I'd worry about a puppy that DIDN'T do the play biting thing.

Go look for discussions on this, it is easy to manage. Good luck!

I expect if you put a puppy in a hamster cage and never fed it or let it out, it might well stunt its growth. ;) Otherwise, no, a properly-sized crate and a crate-trained and properly-exercised dog are a great combination for all concerned.

No. But it can do wonders for them otherwise! It's great for a pup to have a place to call their own. A place for them to be when you aren't home. A place for them to be when they feel like they need a break -- although mine takes her breaks on her dog bed or anywhere where the sun shines down onto the carpet! My crate is collapsable so it is easy to take along on trips. That way she has her 'room' with her. You can purchase a large crate (the one your pup will be in for years) and put in a divider for now as it grows into it's crate. (they sell dividers at most pet stores)
Your pup's crate is it's den. Remember to add a strong chew
toy(s). (stuffed Kong (yippeee!), puzzle toys, good rawhide, etc)
Enjoy your new pup! :)

No, crating won't stunt a dogs growth. Our puppies have always been crated and Keil is 27 1/2" at 11 months. I don't believe his growth was stunted at all.;) If it did stunt their growth Keil would be in his kennel all the time since we don't want him to get any taller:D

Make sure though that you do increase the crate size as your puppy grows. Keil got stuck sideways in his crate one night. I don't know how he did that one but his yelps woke my daughter up who quickly turned him around and got him out. Needless to say the next day he got a new crate;)
