Limitations on Registered Name Length?

Does anyone know if there is a length limit on a dog's AKC registered name? We must include the breeder's kennel name in our new pup's official name and that uses up 15 characters before we add anything.

Thanks,

Bill

For some reason I thought it was 25 characters. I could be wrong?

I just got Ben's ILP # last week (or was it two weeks ago...) - same rules apply....

27 characters are allowed. Include SPACES between the words, and punctuation.

In May of this year it was 26 letters/punctuation marks. NOT counting spaces. It's been this way for awhile now

They used to count spaces years ago but no anymore

Bea's name (see my signature) is exactly what they would allow in May.

Actually the rules for spaces were changed in April of this year however if your dog was born before the change and the application for registration was issued before the change you could still have the 27 characters. The new rules are "Name choices are limited to twenty-five (25) letters. Spaces between words, apostrophes and hyphens are counted"

AKC Naming of Dogs

I submitted both of my guys registration in May of this year and the spaces were counted according to their applications... however there is a way to get around that. Say you wanted to name your dog Joe Blows chance of a lifetime which is exactly 25 characters not including spaces you would write it like this on the registration JoeBlowsChanceOfALifetime... AKC automatically puts a space between capital letters. At least thats how it was a couple years ago... I would say just to be sure you contact AKC

I did contact the AKC prior to sending in the ILP application, and was told 27 'characters', including spaces. I sent the application in September of this year.

Interesting.

I mailed Bea's registration late May or early June. Her name is 26 letters exactly. WITH spaces it is 31 spaces/letters combined

I ADDED boxes on the application form to accomodate her name as they only give you 27 boxes. AKC told me 3 years ago I could do that as long as the letter/punctuation marks did not exceed 26 NOT counting spaces

I also just registered (sent In September but born in July) two Shiba Inu pups (I send in the registration for the new owners of my pups to assure the pups get registered) One of which was also exactly 26 letters (Frontier Better Late Than Nevr) but with spaces it would be 30 blocks

Not a ???? from AKC in any case about the names being too long

Yeah I know they used to allow you to add boxes... but they changed there system this past April and they said at the time that they were no longer able to accomodate names over 25 characters.... and since there were at least 3 different answers including one that is stated on the AKC website that is why I suggested the poster call AKC themselves.... and I am not sure but an ILP application could be different then a full registration application.... all I know is that the new applications only have 25 spaces.

Makes you wonder what the length limit is all about.........I mean, if older dogs have longer names, and they've made some sort of computer changes (such that only 25 characters will fit)...........are longer-named dogs going to get trunkated?

seems like even the people who work at AKC are not uniform about what they will accept, even though the rules seem to indicate that they count spaces and allow 27 blocks, the two dogs I've registered this year (1 early, 1 late) have had 26 letters in their names and if counting spaces too, would have been over the maximum amount of blocks

About 4 years ago I got a pup and I wanted to name him something that exceded the number of spaces. I called up the AKC and asked what I could do. The answer was that they found that people forget what their dog's registered name is if it is too long. I assured them that I wouldn't forget. The person said that I could add as many letters after I had filled up the blocks. That dog's name was 29 characters, including spaces. My latest dog's name is Nightwind's A Piece of the Action, which is 33, including spaces. I registered him a just 2 years ago. I have no idea if any of this counts now that they have a new registation system.
Maybe I should just get a BC and name him Bob:D
