Rotts and Babies

I am in the process of finding a Rott puppy to become part of my family but my wife and I just found out that a human puppy will be arriving in about eight months. Should we continue with our plans for the Rott baby when we have our own on the way?

First of all - congratulations on the pregnancy!! I am expecting in about 12 weeks!! It's very exciting.

While I would not be worried about a trained rottweiler around children (Birdie is going to be 2 by the time the baby arrives), I would not suggest getting a puppy at the same time that you are having a baby. This is my first baby, so I don't know for sure, but I expect it's going to change my world and take up a lot of my time!! Puppies also need alot of your time. If I were you I'd keep doing research on rottweilers and ethical breeders or rescues, and after you get the family thing down pat, then think about taking on the responsibility of raising a well trained, well socialized rottweiler puppy!

Good luck!

I agree with Birdie's Mom. I don't have any children yet, but I have a couple friends who have recently had babies, and they turn your world upside down! Puppies are also babies, and they need lots of time spent socializing and training to become stable adults (especially for Rottweilers!).

I would recommend that you have your (human) baby, and then think about a dog again in a year. Even then, I would think about getting a temperament tested adult rescue from a reputable Rottweiler rescue organization rather than a puppy.

yes, congratulations on the pregnancy!

i have 2 kids.. a 10 yo and a 2 yo. i wanted a puppy when my 2nd son was born. when i mentioned it to one of my co-workers, she suggested i hold off, that a new baby and new pup would be too much to handle. i am SO GLAD i heeded her advice!! i got maverick when my youngest was about 15 months old and maverick was 15 weeks old. i would have lost my mind had i 2 "newborns" to deal with.

so i suggest you wait. settle in with the new family first. :)

Just wanna give my 2 cents..

I have 2 kids one is 2 the other is 4. Having a puppy in the house was like having another baby. I could not have been able to keep my sanity if my kids where not sleeping by 8 at night until about 7 in the morning. Also you do not know about your baby if it maybe has colic or a wierd sleeping schedule.

Btw. we actually considerd a rescue because there are so many nice dogs or older pups needing a home but unfortunatly he had complictions when he got neutered some underlying medical issues they where not aware of I was told afterwards. You might wanna look into that. There are some nice family dogs which lost their home because the family could not keep them for financial reasons. (sorry for that long post)

Thanks to all of you. I sincerely appreciate each and every reply.

From my experience, with babies, both human and Rottie, I know that both can be a handful. I haven't had kids of my own but I have been a surrogate parent frequently as a participant in my large family. I have also had the pleasure of raising and training my own Rottweiler pup before. I don't know what I am going to do just yet but I really appreciate the help!

There's is not enough money on the planet to get me to have a puppy and a baby at the same time. I would suggest getting an adult rescue more or less now so that it's settled in before the baby is born or wait until the baby is at least a year and get a pup.

Congrats on the pending arrival!

Christine
