New kind of collar?

I've never seen one of these before, I would think it would work kind of like a nylon slip collar, but more stylish? What do ya'll think?

Don't know how it would work as a slip collar - but I love the look of rolled leather collars. Cooper wears one (he is a long haired Rottie) and there's virtually no matting or anything when I take it off.

Please consider whether you want to patronize products made by this group. Their other products are dogs raised as farm animals.

Just for clarity, I believe Judi is referring to the fact that the collar is made by the Amish, who are notorious puppy-millers.

I just thought I'd clear that up, because at first I thought you were talking about Drs. Foster and Smith!;)

AHA! Yes - someone recently told me that here in Michigan (and obviously other places) Amish folks are prime puppy-millers. It's made me think twice about buying "Amish chicken" at the store.

I've gotten two rolled leather collars and a leash from these folks:

Not the cheapest, but excellent quality. Plus they will do custom work. And I don't think they are Amish...

The collar looks nice, but I will not spend any money with the Amish. I did send a email to the customer service dept. of Dr. Foster and Smith telling them I will think twice before spending more money with their company. I hope that if more people will send them feed-back about the Amish merchandise they will drop those items. I have always thought highly of Dr F&S since they do good breed profiling in their catalogs and do use Rotts for models.

Duh, wow...that's never clicked with me before. That the Amish are big BYB's. When I was younger my family would go & visit this one Amish family that grew tomatoes for my grandfathers tomato company. I remember that they bred Collies. The little Amish girl who was around my age (11-12 yrs.) showed me a puppy who had a bit of a limp due to a problem with the leg. She told me that the puppy would probably be destroyed.....:( I had totally forgot about this....

Wow....gives the Amish a whole new light.

:)

This may be straying way off-topic now... :o

I was actually thinking of starting a thread wondering what people thought of the ethics of buying Amish products, because of the puppy-milling thing.

Sue - I fired off an email to F&S too!

I don't know that a thread is necessary. What can people think, if they are thinking that is. One simply does not give money to an enterprise that one is ethically opposed to. Decision made. Philosophically it is similar to purchasing puppies from pet stores or puppy millers. You simply provide them with the dollars to continue their business and make no mistake, they are in business to make money.

So the verdict is that, if it weren't made by Amish, it would be a more stylish version of a slip collar? I'm just curious, as I have never seen one before.

Well, on the collar (sorry I am responsible for the drifting of the thread):

If you want a slip collar which should only be used for training purposes, get a regular one that slides easily and does the job as designed.

If you want a decorative collar, get the rolled collar in buckle form. The described one will not slip effectively for training purposes, however would still have the restrictions of not being on the dog when you are not with the dog, so I can't see the purpose other than marketing.
