Why did you import?

Sparked from the import / domestic thread....

Why did you import your dog (defined as getting a dog born in a different country and bring him to yours)?

Personally, I had arranged for a pup from a domestic breeder. Sadly that breeding didn't take. I then heard of a similar breeding, close to the lines that I had wanted. There was a pup that met my criteria of a show / obedience prospect. He just happened to be in Pennsylvania and I'm in Ontario. :D

So I have an American Import in Canada. I had to register him with the AKC, get him microchipped, attain a 7 generation pedigree and then register him with the CKC. So Parker is now double registered with the American and Canadian Kennel Clubs. :)

What drew you to importing your pup / dog? What did you have to do in order to do it all?

Maybe I am dense but I imagine that people import because
they want a pup from a certain breeding/breeding lines not available in their country.

Yep. I was looking for a dog that would/should have the drive to do schutzhund. Although more and more litters are being born stateside that have the lines to do the work I wanted a pedigree not full of CD's and more full of Schutzhund titles and Ztp's. Odds are in my favor to obtain a dog capable of the work. No gaurantee but better odds.

I imported my Lucky from Quebec to Florida. My handler, at the time, saw him at CRC and his breeder said he was for sale. She sent me a video and I was hooked. He was already AKC and CKC registered so it was no problem at all

As Keith said, I was interested in working bloodlines. Due to the number of clubs, and the greater interest in the sport, it is easier to find a pedigree full of SchH/ZTP titles in Europe than it is here.........unless that dog has been imported.

Not to say that US dogs can't and don't work well, but I like to see the bitches titled too, and many US breeders slack on that part. As well, I wanted certain bloodlines (Pascha, Austrian Military) and it was easier to shop in Europe.
