We are fortunate to have 2 rooms between the kitchen and the dogs' fenced yard.

Molly's (1 yo chocolate lab) food bowl goes on the floor in the summer kitchen (between kitchen and mudroom). Phoenix's (2 1/2 yo rottweiler) bowl goes in the front of his open crate in the mudroom. He eats facing his crate, not in it. This works for us.

Czar eats in the kitchen but is use to eating just about anywhere, inside and out:D. I think it's a good idea to get then use to eating in different places so it's not foreign to them.

Daisy has a rubber-backed white mat that has black paw prints on it (OK, it's not THAT white any more) and the words "Spoiled Rotten." It is against the wall behind the breakfast table. Her water bowl is on the mat and meals are served there also. I put her food down just as we humans come to the table. She is a fairly slow and meticulous eater...no splashes, no mess. When the weather is warm and we picnic on the porch, she joins us (mat and bowls come outside too). When my daughter and her dog visit, the little Jack Russell Terror eats at the opposite end of our fairly long kitchen. She will wolf down her food and make a bee-line for Daisy's dish. Dopey, docile Daisy will back off and let the little beast eat her supper.

Amber eats in the kitchen, as did Smidgen. We've got the paw printed place mat for both food & water bowls (the cat insists on drinking out of the dog's bowl) agains the wall opposite the kitchen table. The cat's food is also in the kitchen, a gravity feeder that is kept blocked off from Amber.

But both Amber and Smidgen before her were happy to eat anywhere, be it outside, in a field, in a tent, in the car, the bathroom of a hotel room etc. Thankfully Smidgen was not a messy eater, nor is Amber, but Smidgen wouldn't leave a single crumb behind whereas Amber will usually miss a few. This makes the cat extremely happy as she delights in cleaning the dog's bowl after the dog is finished eating. Nothing there but rottweiler spit and the occasional kibble crumb but the crazy feline loves it .

We have a breakfast bar type set up separating the kitchen from the living room and dining room.
Aedia is fed on the living room side, Dante on the kitchen side.
The cats are also fed separately, 1 in the computer room, 1 in the guest room and 1 in the bathrrom (doors closed to keep them from going after each other's food and away from the dogs while their eating)...
