They vet their dogs. They feed them Pedigree, (great food afterall.) They only sell their dogs to loving families. Their dogs are good dogs. They are healthy dogs. They are doing nothing wrong. They don't want to sell show dogs, they only want to sell loving pets and that's what they are going to continue doing.
It's very scary - there's been an argument going on on a mailing list I'm on about this subject, and what you say above is EXACTLY what people defending their BYB practices are saying...exactly.

People arguing against the need to show, because after all showing doesn't make a dog any better, you know. People saying that most dogs are pets anyway, so why not breed for the pet market. People saying that anyone who isn't a breeder shouldn't have an opinion about what's right and wrong about breeding, and that it's not as simple as "this is right and that is wrong". People saying that "breeding to improve" is a crock. I eventually stopped arguing, it was pointless.

Yep. You can't educate someone who is on the defensive. Yet another reason why the free, LBYB information packet works. It's out there for them. All they have to do is call to get one. It arrives in the mail in an easy to understand format. They can read it at their leisure (buyers and breeders) without fear of judgement.

It works.

Did you post the info about this? (if not, can you?) I don't think I've heard of it.

Rotts,

you need to give it a few days, then call back, or have someone else call back and "inquire about the ad in the paper" and see whay he says..if he says "oh I'm sorry, I'm going to wait till the pups are 8 weeks old..." then you KNOW he listened to you..on the other hand, if his response is different than that, you know he was only being polite when he kept you on the phone for 2 hours. It's a topic discussed enough to earn itself a sticky. ;) (In this forum, I might add.)

Update::
Well the ad has still been in the paper for the last 3 nights, I was disappointed and called from my husband's cell phone since he already has my number( blasted caller ID)His home number has been disconnected so I called the alternate number, no answer but I left a voice mail stating "I was REALLY interest in a puppy and would pay what ever he is asking."I used a different voice of course.( I'm talented that way:D . No return phone call. So I called him back this morning, still no answer so I left another voice mail, telling him it was me and I was just checking to see how HE was doing.
With in 10 minutes he called me back!!!! He said he paid for the ad to run for a week and he has been bombarded with phone calls so he had his home phone disconnected temporarily. He told me how much he appreciated me taking the time to talk to him about the puppies and he really wants what is best for them, he called the people that bought the first puppy and asked them to bring her back for a few weeks!
He really does love the breed and his bitch is his baby.I am going out this afternoon to meet him and the dogs in person.He did sell the year old male to a couple that owns a 10 acre ranch and has a spayed female, so NO more puppies from that dog at least. He has made an appointment for Char( his Bitch) to be spayed in 6 weeks. We happen to go to the same vet, so I offered to take her in so he doesn't have to miss any work. He said that would be great and he would even pay me!!I told him that his willingness to listen to me and do the right thing was more payment than anyone could ever ask for.:D :D :D

Thanks for taking the time to talk to this gentleman, and offering your help. You've just saved a lot of heartache, both human and fur.

If you are going to meet this guy, please bring along your husband and be very careful.

Good luck in continuing education with him.

All I can say is....WOW!!! That's just incredible!! Yes, please do be careful. He sounds like a nice enough guy, and he probably is, but you never know.

Rotts and Roses,
I think it is GREAT that you took the time to educate this man and it sounds like he really did listen to you! It does sound like he really cares about his dog and is willing to do what is best for the puppies and his bitch. I am glad to hear that he is getting her spayed also.

GOOD JOB!!!!!!!:)
