Just venting!

I took my 7 month old rott that weighs about 90 punds with me to a softball game this past Friday trying to do my part in the whole socialization and everything. Some people were receprive to him and wanted the dog kisses but for the most part, I got dirty looks from people. Somebody even asked me, "Do you have a good hold on him?" There was someone that asked me, "He's very calm, not like a normal rott." I told him it's all in the training and that for the most part they are calm and confident dogs. Sometimes they get in the wrong hands and it's the opposite. There was also a smaller dog out there barking and making a lot of noise and I bet that owner didn't get the looks that I got. What's up with that? Rotts are being discriminated against because of a few unresponsible owners. I thought this discrimination stuff was done with. And what's up with states making laws for pit bulls and rotts. In some states you can't get homeowners insurance if you own one of these breeds. Somebody should be fighting against that. I'm just fed up with dirty looks and people grabbing their kids like I own a killer or something. Again, I hate to vent but I thought someone might feel my same pain.

I feel the pain!

I can relate on a different note. I own an insurance agency and hate when I have to tell someone I cannot write your insurance because of the type of dog you own. In my opinion, we as rotty owners have to stick together and fight for our right to own this type of breed. This means that all CLUBS have to come together and learn to support eachother. Because if we don't, the end result will be no more rotties in this country!!!:( :(

Unfortunately there are more than a few irresponsible owners. We as responsible owners, must continue to educate people. As long as there are places that we can take our dog(s), this is the perfect opportunity to show people how they behave - nothing better than a free demonstration on how well your Rottweiler behaves.

And Stevenc - I sure hope that Rottweilers aren't on your list of "If you own one we wont insure you".

This subject has me torn...I don't know many rotts-in fact mine is the only rott that I know of in the town I live in. But I do know a lot of people who own pit bulls. And all of them are sweet, sweet dogs. My huspand's friend who owns a pit bull is huge. She will come up to you and lay her check on your mouth. Also this pit lets the friends daughter use the dogs head a step up to the couch.

This subject just pisses me off. Since owning a rott, I have tried to change people's minds about them.
But, know matter what I say people still think of rotts as "mean"

Just Venting

Well Patty I am sorry to say that the majority of insurance companys list this breed of dog. Again, this is why we have to fight for our right to own this breed. This is very similiar to the gun laws. If the NRA was not around, we probably would not have the right to own a gun either. So take a page out of their book and talk to people about this problem and have them join the different clubs that help fight this serious problem.

Hi Rocky's Mom. The funny thing about the insurance companies are if you buy the dog after you buy the house, they cannot cancel your insurance legally. Interesting!!!!!!!!:) :)

Also, stevenc forgot to add that we live in the state of PA. It is illegal in PA to deny insurance based solely on breed of dog owned. The insurance companies must abide by the state law or risk losing their license in the state.

Traveler's insurance in the state of PA now has dropped their breed list. All they ask is if you have a vicious dog or if your dog has ever bitten anyone in the past.

Also, State Farm operates on a one free bite rule. They do not ask what breed of dog and they will allow you one bite. The next however and you are done.

From what I understand Allstate also will cover Rottweilers in PA although I do not know their specific breed rules. I don't beleive that they have a breed hit list.

And, Erie also will cover in PA. They didn't care, then they came out with a breed hit list. Then I guess they got smart and saw how much revenue they lost from people they dropped and reinstated their not denying coverage based on breed policy.

As for other states, you need to check.

The insurance compnaies set the policies, not the agents. Trust me, Steven would not deny people if he was not bound to by his contracts. It serves no one, neither him or the insured to be dishonest and skirt the issue. He could lose his license and the insured could lose their coverage if there is a bite and a subsequent claim.

Oh...I see. I checked and in the state of kansas you can't have a rott, chow, pit, or doberman or they will deny you insurance. The only place I checked with was State Farm. Our cousin has a pit and there insurance got dropped b/c they own one. Granted they didn't have a pit when they got the insurance, but the insurance people found out and had to drop there insurance....

What kind of clubs can we join to fight this kind of thing? I'm pissed about this discrimination and want to do something about it. I'm ready to do the million man rottweiler owner march or something (Aren't I the millitant one?)

I just work on changing attitudes one person at a time! :)

Have a well trained dog, and take him out in public...parades, parks, to the coffee or icecream store, whatever. Teach him to pull a cart when he's old enough and have him pull neighborhood kids around!

You could also look into therapy dog work... :)

Steven and Samantha, you may want to check on Travelers Insurance again. Before I had called you I had checked with the local Travelers agency and they did have a breed hit list.
