Skunked! THANKS!

Well, one again, I am forever in the debt of fellow rott.net folks!

My sister in law went out for a last cigarette and took Cheyanne with her - well, Cheyanne got skunked tonight - and MAN did she REEK! They both come in, Cheyanne looks like she was foaming at the mouth and her left eye was watering bigtime. The stink ini the house was so bad my eyes were watering, I could TASTE it - YUCK!

Well, I did a quick search of Rott.net and lo and behold, found the recipe to get rid of skunk stink - and boy does it work! Took over an hour of scrubbing and rinsing and scrubbing, but we think we got it all. We put an opthalmic triple anti-biotic ointment in her eye and it heolped with that irritation. We'll take her to the vet if it looks worse though.

So, I thank you for the recipe - it is now printed and haning on the refrigerator if we should need it again. Tomorrow I will be borrowing the skunk stink remover shampoo from the shelter and if she has any residue, we'll give her a thorough once over with that.

I'm off to wash ALL of the clothing she laid on, the bathroom floor and rinse the deck off...STILL stinks!!

Oh yeah....my bother in law SHOT the skunk (he's an IDIOT!)! We had to file a report with the police because a neighbor freaked out (well, wouldn't you?!?!)...and the skunk will be sent for rabies testing, just to be safe. Luckily, I nagged the heck out of everyone to get them all up to date on rabies, or Cheyanne would be in quarantine for 3 months!

The same thing happenned to us a couple of weeks ago! We just bought a new house, and didn't know there was a skunk living under the garden shed. So poor Tippy got skunked....
That IS the worst smell ever! And we still havn't managed to evict our skunk.

If I had only known about the de-skunking recipe before.....

My Diva used to chase and kill any skunk that dared enter her yard. I've seen her sprayed full in the face and not break stride. It was one of the few things she did that I really didn't like. :( After she'd killed the poor skunk, she'd roll on the carcass to, I assume, get any spots the skunk may have missed. Yuck! I'll make sure to print out that de-skunking thread and keep it on my fridge too. Even though Diva's gone, I can just see little Janosch following in her pawprints.....

Funny skunk story..... Many years ago, my friends got skunked while in bed. Unbeknownst to them, they had a skunk that slept in a tree outside their bedroom window. It was a hot summer night and they had all the windows open. In the morning when their alarm went off it scared the skunk and the startled skunk let fly with the skunk spray – right into their bed! Not a good way to wake up.

Skunk Stink Removal Recipe courtesy of rott.net member TrishB (along with a 'lesson on skunk behavior from TrishB as well - THANK YOU!!)

Skunk Remedy

1 qt 3% Hydrogen Peroxide

1/4 Cup Baking Soda

1 or 2 tsp liquid soap (dish detergent)

Mix the ingredients just prior to using. The mixture cannot be stored.

The reason it's so hard to get rid of the smell is that the spray is oil-based. So it repells water and the vast majority of soaps! Therefore, you require something acidic (not acid, but acidic rather than alkaline) to 'cut' the oil base. Hence the above recipe; some have even said Coke-A-Cola will do the job!

As for why you're seeing so much and to know the warning signs, here's some info on Skunks:

Mainly nocturnal, skunks are also active during the dusk and dawn periods. But they will warn you!! Most skunks give warning signals before spraying. They stamp their feet, raise their tails and walk in a stiff-legged position.

Thanks to Rott.net and especially TrishB for originally posting the recipe!! Be sure to rinse the coat very very well after using the peroxide solution - it can affect the color of the coat. Cheyanne got a good bath two days later with an Oatmeal & Aloe shampoo so I think that helped as well. No residual stink in the house now, but we could all smell it for a good three days - yuck...and Cheyanne will now stick close to anyone when she's in the front yard - smart girl! I still smell that skunk on occassion in the yard at night...and any skunks seen by my bro in law better hightail it out of the yard or their days are numbered :D

The gardeners reccommend the same formula but they specify Dawn dishwash. Dawn holds grease away from the dishes, remember the TV ad ?
