Normal Dentition

Rakki's adult teeth are just coming in, and it occurred to me that I was rusty on what normal dentition (as in tooth counts) was.

This is a good site, with illustrations, showing what normal tooth counts are, and some common problems.

Anyone have any other useful links about this?

42 teeth total

6 incisors (small front teeth) top and 6 bottom

2 canines (fangs) top and bottom

2 teensy premolars top and bottom directly behind the canines

all the rest are molars

I know, that's why I posted it! :) I went looking and it actually took a bit of effort, and this was the only site I found with a chart with the numbers of the types of teeth. I figured if it was useful to me, it might be useful to someone else - glad you found it so!

Good luck tomorrow! :)

Could anyone share what is the age of the puppy before you determine whether the dentition is okay. That is undershot or normal or overshot classification should be done only after the permanent set? Thanks.

I have had dogs bites go off as late as 4 years of age.

However if your pup has a good bite at 12 months old, then your odds are better of it maintaining a good bite
