Living in the house

Is it possiable for rottie's to have full roaming of the house and still maintain a well kept house?without killing myself with constant cleaning up after him.I've had a grown rottie before in the house but he didn't really want to roam he had his favorite spot and that's about where he stayed. So is that just common with the breed? Please bare with me if I didn't seem to ask this question right .Most people here seem like experts and I'm far from one.

My Chase has full roam of the house and the only thing I have to worry about is hair.

Chase is, however, about 8 years old.

If I remember correctly, you have a young pup. Young puppies have lots of energy to burn and your house is such a great playground when you are not around!

They have to taught house manners and that is your job. You don't give them the run of the house before that. This applies to all breeds and has nothing to do with Rottweiler or Pug. First step is to have them in the room you are in and teach them, not leaving them alone in the house and then being mad at them for getting into something. I have three Rottweilers with full run of the house, but youngsters are kept in a safe area when I am raising them until they understand everything. When raising the youngsters, they are always out when I am home for that is the teaching/learning time. You can't teach them if they are isolated off by themselves.

Psyche will be 3 in December and still does not get full run of the house when I'm gone.......

My 14 yr old Pom mix earned that place first......:D

Not to mention my whole back of the house is nothing but huge glass windows looking over birds and squirells.....

Not a temptation I'm going to trust her with for a very very long time.......LOL!

Thanks for the replies I meant to say when I'm at home because I'd rather him be crated when I'm gone out the house.

My Rottie is 15 months old and he was given roam of the house at night at 12 months and has been out of his crate during the day for a month now. I do keep a gate up leading to the second floor during the day because he likes to play with the cats (who don't like playing with him). He hasn't gotten into anything since he's been out. The only time he sneaks something he shouldn't is when someone's around to see him do it.

Neither Akasha nor Keil have full run of the house yet. They will be a year old October 30 and I seriously doubt that even then they will be allowed to be unsupervised in any part of the house, especially Akasha. Keil can be left out at night in one of our bedrooms (as long as it is 'puppy proofed") because he is really good about just sleeping all night. Akasha is still into EVERYTHING! No matter how well I think I have "puppy proofed" a room she STILL finds something to get into. I have to keep her occupied at all times or she starts looking for things to entertain her on her own I think that it will still be a while before she can be trusted to have full run of the house.

I have a baby gate in the hallway blocking them in the front part of the house. There is usually someone out there with them. I do feel comfortable leaving them out there unattended while I take a quick shower but that is pretty much the only time. I do hope that eventually they will be able to have more freedom but for now this is best for them and us;)

i've been really lucky with maverick because he has not been a destructive dog at all. he has full run of the house while we're home (except for the upstairs where the bedrooms are) and is confined at night to the utility room. he used to sleep in the crate but i got sick of looking at it in my family room and moved him to the utility room at 14 months old. i do let him have free roam when i'm gone only for a short time.. like when i need to run to the store or something and he's always been really good about it.

even though he's been a really good dog, i don't think he'll ever have free roam at night. only because our carpeting is only a couple years old and if he has an accident, it's much easier to clean it up from the linoleum in the utility room than it is the carpeting.

So as you can see it really is up to the dog.

BUT you said while you are home. There is no reason why the dog shouldn't be able to do this. Start off slowly by having the dog on a leash as you go around the house. As the dog behaves consistently move to longer and longer leads. Eventually you will be able to block off a couple rooms and let him off lead which will lead to on his own.

Like someone said YOU need to TEACH him what you expect of him within YOUR house. Be consistent and patient and take it slow. Definately crate him while you are not home though at least until he is totally trustworthy when you are there.
Good luck!!

I meant to say when I'm at home...
When our pup was very small, I didn't leash her to me. But it is a great way to work with a pup none the less.

Our LR has a couple of couches positioned in an "L". The space to gain entry was about the size of a door, so it was easy to keep her within the area. As soon as she wandered off, we'd call her back. We made returns pleasant and rewarding.

We'd play, watch TV, read, etc and still be able to keep her from dismantling the place. At about 6 months, she graduated to being uncrated at night.

She's 2 years old now. We can leave all rooms open, safely when we're home. We've worked our way up to her behaving out of the crate, alone, for 1-2 hours.

She 's still crated for longer periods. She's never chewed furniture, just nonsense things like tissues, toilet paper, pens, and chapstick. We're still working.

My friend's Xena, was loose in mid-puppyhood and never chewed a thing according to her.

Anyway, You have some great thoughts on how to accomplish your goal...now, Good luck! :D I'm sure you'll do well.

Niki, was 6, before she had full use of the house 24/7. She had been crated nights, and when ever we were not at home before that. She did eat a hole in a carpet, at three. Tried to make a short tirp to town, only gone about 15 minutes, and came home to the hole.
Hannah, is 5 and she is still crated at night. If I know I will be home in a short amount of time, I will let her have run of the house. I do close our daughters bedroon door.
Merlin, 4, is never left in the house alone. If I go out to move the water hoses, he comes with. He is always crated if we are going ou, and every night. As of today, he will all ways be crated. This is a dog that needs a 40 hour work week, and lots of over time.

Sebastian, 3, has full run of the house while I'm home and when I'm at work and I have never had a problem. No chewing, no accidents, no taking things out of the garbage or off counters. The only room off-limits is my upstairs bathroom. . .not because of Sebastian, but because my cat Ramrod has a habit of peeing on the bath mat.

Lion, 6.5yrs. has free roam in the house when I'm home or not without a problem. I can leave the house in the middle of my work(painting) and come back with everything untouched! He is so tolerant of every helpless stray we have to bring home from our walks. When I met my first rescue 6 yrs. ago-a seriously hurt 1 mo. pup, i thought Lion would chew up this 2 lb leg broken tiny thing, but on the contrary he never mind letting the pup sleep on his leg to feel safe. The youngest pup he ever took care of was a 10 days old 0.8 lb pup being dumped in a box( I live in Taiwan this is not uncommon), I took lots of pics. of how huge Lion had looked after this little tiny pup until his 4mos. to go to Germany for adoption( he is 2yrs. with his forever loving family now.)
