I think you've answered your own question. First I'd speak to the woman without taking your dog. If that doesn't get you the results you are looking for, call the proper authorities. You have a right to walk your dog on a public street.

Not to make light of your situation, but my son had a dog who was not above attacking a small dog. He had the dog at the beach, on leash, and this small terrier type came charging at his dog. Knowing that the terrier would not survive if his dog grabbed it he bent down as the terrier closed in and scooped the terrier up. The owner did come up apologizing for his dog. I don't know what my son would have done if the owner hadn't been nearby.

Trust me Iblax, I would never consider "counting" on my dog to frighten another off. I simply said that putting her in a stand stay-leave it has been enough to intimidate other dogs so far.

If there were truly an attack, like the one you mentioned with four charging dogs, I suppose I'd be wishing for something more than a spray bottle.

The story originally had to do with an owner who seems quite insenisitive to the plight of others by allowing her dog to "walk" with her without the benefit of a leash. The rule where we live (not New Zealand) is to have the dog "under control."

I suppose it could imply vioce control, but we have leash laws here to. What I'm saying (perhaps badly) is this is not a wild pack attack. This is a dog who's uncaring owner "trusts" it not to do anything, or least so I would think.

Years ago, we used to ride bikes down the road and there were 2 little dogs that used to run out and bite our feet. My mom gave us a squirt gun "loaded" with diluted ammonia. One squirt in the face and that's all it took. After that the little mutts just sat in the yard and watched us ride by.

You're not going to get flamed by me alexav ;). I'm sure the ammonia would be less painful than the other things that could happen.

Update on the rushing dog

Well the day after i wrote the post about the dog rushing us snarling and carrying on, the dog did it again and we were walking along the street she was walking along the street and came around a corner quite a distance behind me her dog off the leash again , anyway the dog rushed and indy stiffened up and i yelled at the dog "get out of it" and put myself between the dog and indy.... she saw it happening and i managed to make her dog go away.... i looked at her and she didnt look happy so i just continued to walk making indy heel.... she was very well behaved..... anyway the next morning the dog is in its front yard on a run :D she must have got the message... havent seen her on the street yet but will let you know what happens if i do.

PS thanks for all the advice it didnt fall on deaf ears... i really appreciated it..... i just bought a computer for home so keep ur eyes peeled i will post pics of Indy and Neo

I'm with Mary. I have had my 8 year old rottie for 1 1/2 years now and have been attacked 4 times by loose dogs, 2 times were by 2 dogs at the same time (different sets of dogs both times) and the last two was by lone dogs. Of the 4 incindents, only the last one had the owner present. After my baby girl (who was politely in a sit position but growling her dismay, bit (didn't break skin just a warning nibble) the other dog, he high tailed it back to the owner crying its fool head off. The owner in this case did opologize profusely and immediately leashed his dog. The other times, I put Brandy behind me in a sit/stay and I growled and commanded the other dogs to back down. It worked 2 out of the 3 times and the one it didn't a guy in a pick-up put the truck between us and the other dogs. I have changed my walking route with her several times now to avoid these problem areas BUT!!! If this lady saw her dog charging you and your dog - she darn well knew what was going on - she doesn't need to be told and if she doesn't have enough sense to know that leashing your dog while not in a fenced yard is for both others protection and to protect your dog - then she doesn't deserve to own a dog and I would report her and her dog to the authorities. That eliminates all the hard feelings between neighbours because anyone can call in.

You would be doing everyone a favour including the little trouble maker.

Thought you all might like an update

Well i think the battle has been won, have walked indy for the last few mornings with no incidents :D i notice that the dog is either inside or on a run outside. I think my yelling at her dog the other day worked :D .

Thanks to all the replies, and advice it is not nice being rushed by another dog but if he does it again in the future i think it will be straight to the authorities...

Thanks

Cat

Had to reply.

This happened to me. Walk my 5 year old girl rotty twice a day. 2 months ago we're passing a house and this little poodle comes bolting out of the house, unleashed. We run into the street and away and it follows us.
My dog took the dog in her mouth, shook a few times and let her go.

Long story short, they sued US in small claims court because her dog had to get stitches. And the judge awarded her the vet bill!

Never mind we were simply walking our dog and that we have city and community leash laws. Nope.....you are a big dog, that is a small dog, small dog got hurt...big dog fault. Even though the owner of the big dog was responsible and the little dog's owner was not.

We stay away from neighborhoods now.

It probably was: You have a Rottweiler and since rotts have bad names, we are sticking you with the vet bill. Poodles can be just mean as rotts are. Did you hear about the poodle who chewed her owners lip off???

That and insurance-all of it just pisses me off.

Kim - I was thinking you really got a raw deal (and maybe you did), but after re-reading the thread about what happened with your dog, I'm left wondering. Either you really didn't represent your situation very well in court, or there's more to the judge's decision that you've implied in your post.

http://www.rottweiler.net/forums/sho...threadid=25829

Were you as responsible as you should have been at the time this happened? I just think that's something we all have to ask ourselves when problems occur, and be careful not to gloss over the details. Was it really as simple as "little dog hurt...big dog fault", or could it be that "unleashed friendly little dog trots up to leashed dog-aggressive dog"? That doesn't make the unleashed dog's owner's "right", but it does put a little different spin on it. Would you agree?

My Rant

NO OFFENCE MEANT BUT - I feel that we are responsible for our dogs and our safety first and foremost... if another dog comes rushing out and my dog bites that dog then i feel it is the other owners responsibility especially if it is an aggressive rush, the dog that has been rushing myself and indy for instance, Indy is a fantastic dog and loves other dogs, but this dog showing her aggression she may one day think yea bring it on ... then whos fault is it, if i am abiding by the laws... just pisses me off, one of my friends said the other day what would you do if that terrier bit Indy would i report it.. all i could imagine is the people at the dog controll place laughing their heads off about a terrier biting a rottie , we own our dogs because of the loyalty and their fantastic personality and nature people should get a clue.

Wow that felt good to get that off my chest ;)

FYI i walked indy yesterday morning and we got rushed again BUT the owner was out there like a shot calling her dog back and i heard her saying would you knock that off.. i guess she is trying.
