We have yet to buy Julius a dog bed. He has these fleecy/woolen blankets that we put in his crate with him. Several have a few small holes but for the most part he doesn't chew on them. BUT, I went to a garage sale & bought a cheap comfortor & in the morning it was gutted. So I'm sticking with our cheap Wal-Mart blankets that Julius doesn't really show any interest in.

Mayyyyybe someday he'll get a dog bed....but then it'll be a chew-proof one. Which I've heard that some dogs destroy in 30 minutes. So we'll see. I really want to get him a comfy wool crate pad...but I'm afraid he would just rip it to bits. So we'll wait.... ;)

:)

Best buy on doggy beds is Costco.

They have very nice large beds with zip off covers for about $18. Sometimes on sale for $14. They are nicer than the $45 ones I see at the pet stores or catalogs.

And if anyone is looking for crate pads for their dogs, White Dog Bone Company makes the BEST fleece crate mats. These thing are absolutely indestructible. I wash them, vaccuum them and have more than one dog try to eat them to no avail. They have been rained on, drug all the way home from a dog show hanging out the back of the tailgate and dragging on the pavement. I use them in crates and also as their designated dog beds in the family room...they chew their marrow bones on them.

They are pricy at $45 for the 36 x 48 (fits a 500 crate) but two of them I bought 8 years ago and they are still going strong. Beats the hell out of replacing them every year beause I bought cheap ones. I have 6 and am getting ready to order two more for the new pup.

Go to http://www.whitedogbone.com/acatalog...e_Pads_33.html

And, if you do to the home page you will also see that they sell very nice treats and toys as well:

And no, I do not work for White Dog, nor am I affiliated with them. I am just a happy customer who wants to pass on info about a good product when I see it!

Chivas had 3 beds, one was a big round "sheepskin" one with a removable cover and nylon on the bottom that I got from Petopia on the internet. One was a very thin 'sheepskin' foam one that she would lay on when it was cooler and the other I made for her, i took 'egg crate' foam for a twin bed size, folded it in half and covered it with a thick mattress pad, this was the one she slept on the most when she was battling osteo and could no longer move around alot, kept her from getting too sore and was very big so she could move around on it and not be hanging off of it and on the floor.

Hmm Samantha....now I'm tempted to buy one for Julius. We think that part of the problem with his elbow caluses could be that he's pushing back the blankets in the crate and lying on the crate pan. So maybe this would be a solution. Sounds like he wouldn't be able to destroy them.....

How long are your dogs left in the crate? Julius is usually left in for about 5 hours a day & then at night. He has yummy Nylabones and stuffed kongs & balls....but he usually decides to chew on the bedding. I just don't want to spring for the crate pad & have it destroyed...but with your testimony I might just have to try. :)

Also, what makes it different & chew proof for your dogs since it doesn't state on the website that it's indestructible. Thanks!

:)

Hi Brooke. Sorry it took me a few days to get back to you. Many Rotts have callouses. Athena won't lay in her crate without a pad and Disel won't lay in his crate with one. I mean, they go in, but they will sit ALL day. Disel sleeps on his back in his crate so no callouses so far. A lot of kennel dogs have callouses, too. Athena and Disel average about 6 to 7 hours in the crate per day depending on how me and hubby arrange our schedules.

Frankly if Julius chews on bedding, I would not put any in. There is no law that says they have to have bedding. Disel is perfectly happy with no crate pad. When I put them in there he'd gnaw on them, bark at them, hump them and then pee on them. So I stopped and he is much happier that way. However he loves to lay on them in the livingroom. But when he gest mad at Athena he takes it out on the crate pads...LOL! THAT is how I know they are tough.

They don't say that the pads are indestructible. I just know all the things that have happened to them and I still have the first two I purchased. I have two power chewers and so far they are intact. I've washed them and vaccummed them more times than I care to admit.

HTH!

Thanks Samantha. That does help. I think I'll be ordering one today just to try it out on the living room floor for a bit. Our local pet stores gets a lot of products from White Bone Company that Julius loves....especially their yummy biscuits.

Thanks for the help.

:)
