anyone had eye surgery done?

Blaze has one droopy eye, and the vet said that it was a simple procedure to correct, he does them all the time. He said it is just excess skin below the eye that gets tightened up.

I don't really see a need to do it, the only drawback is that a lot of dust and stuff gets into that eye as it hangs open a lot more than the other one, and there is a lot of goop in it all the time because of this.

Has anyone ever had this procedure done on their Rott? If so, what did it cost and what was the recovery like?

My Jazzy had Entropian that was corrected last year on both eyes. We just had her left eye re-done because of a small growth. Since they were working on her eye anyway, they tightened up the eye. (The first surgery overcorrected the problem). Recovery is 12 days and we never had a problem, you can't even tell she has stiches. She is much more comfortable without the goop in her eye. The procedure was about $300.

Entropian is also uncomfortable to the dog, as the eye lashes brush across the eye. My first Rottie had surgery to correct it twice. At first it looked good , but then it came back.

Thanks - that was what the vet called it, I couldn't remember. I'm still debating whether we should do it or not, but I wouldn't do it for a while anyway. Blaze has had enough stress lately! And he IS 7... I don't know, we'll have to think about it. Thanks!

If Blaze is intact, why not have the eye done when he's neutered??

That's an excellent idea, that way he would not hve to undergo general anesthesia twice. I am going to ask our vet about that possibility and what the cost would be for the combined procedure (hopefelly less, one anesthesia instead of two).

I would have the surgery done if you can possibly do so. The recovery time is about 10 to 12 days and he will have to wear an elizebethian(sp) collar to keep him from rubbing the eye. If you don't have the surgery he will be much more prone to eye infections.

Xavier had his first eye lid surgery done when he was fixed. Worked out nice.

entropion: eye lid turned inward, eye lashes often rub on the surface of the eye ball.

ectropion:eye lid droops down and outward exposing the eye ball
Both conditions are damaging and usually require surgery later on.

I thought Ozzy had entropion until I looked it up in my rottweilers for dummys book, now I see he has minor ectropion.
I was saying he has " bassett hound" eyes. I'm so glad you posted this. Guess we will be having the surgery too:( Good luck with Blaze
