I'm at a loss here...if you agree getting a female is better than two males - why get another male? Get the female, have her spayed (without having ANY litters!) and be done with it! It will not kill her to not have puppies. Trust me on that one.
I love our females living here, they are great pets...but I can only imagine the pups they'd have, as well as the health problems...one of the females has HD, one has cancer, the third has what the vet calls 'a genetic problem with her feet (nails)' as well as digestive issues...not good breeding 'stock'...
I have two males here with VERY similar personalities, and I swear that if I left them alone for longer than 2 minutes, they'd try to kill each other. Main difference between the two? MY male has been to many training classes beyond basic training, gets out of the house several times a week and is a well behaved dog. My mother in laws male (I live with them...that's a whole 'nother thread

!) outweighs my dog by about 40 pounds, went to basic obedience only and pushes everyone (except me and hubby) around. He rarely gets out of the house, except to go to the yard to go potty. He has already bitten my dog twice over stupid stuff (pie on the table, walking past him while he was walking in the other direction) and he is just basically a rude dog. I am waiting for him to bite a HUMAN before my in-laws realize he's out of control. The other night mom in law said to the dog as he pushed around her and just wanted attention "WHAT do you want, dog? Leave me alone!" I replied "Maybe he would like some attention, more than you give him...ever think of that?" I know I opened up a hornets nest but she rarely pays much attention to him and doesn't seem to 'get it' that my dog is well behaved BECAUSE I do more than feed him. Ugh!
Anyways...I'm not saying you'll have the same problems, but it's the general consensus here that having to same sex dogs, relatively close in age is often asking for trouble.
