To spray or not to spray?

Hello :)

I was walking my girl around our street today when a poodle that lives across the way came bolting out of it's yard barking and running at us full speed. So much so that I must admit while I was saying go home, bad dog, and he was still running at us that I was a little scared of what would happen. I put my girl in a sit stay which she did very well and proceeded to yell for this dog to go home. It would head back then as we turned around chase us again. Should I speak to the owner or just bring a bottle with vinegar and water and spray the dog? I don't want to change paths and we have a beautiful grassy area across from our house that is perfect for our training sessions. Which it seems the poodle feels that it is his yard.

I would speak to the owner first if you could. There are dog owners that would get all bent out of shape if you sprayed their dog. I'm not defending the poodle mind you just pointing out a possible outcome to spraying the dog first.

I agree, I would speak with the owner first, as it is there responsibility to keep control of their dog. If after you speak with the owner, then in my opinion, resort to the spray bottle. good luck.

I would speak to the owner if I could but if no one is around and a dog is runing at me and my dog I am spraying the dog, I carry pepper spray with me every time I go on jogs, if there is a dog fight even if it wasn't your fault, its always the big bad rottweilers fault, so to avoid all that I spray the dog, works great :)

Thanks for the advice. Fortunately I think the neighbor who saw me screaming at the poodle to get home (who I thought might help me but nooo just went inside) must have told their neighbor about the incident.

I bet it was more like a rottie was going to eat your dog but either way the dog has not been outside since.

Well, I can see I won't be popular....BUT!!!

I would spray the little MUTT!!!! And I mean GOOD!!! If that dog is CHARGING you, I don't CARE!! SPRAY IT!!!

What if it wasn't YOU, what if it was a SMALL child riding a bike down the street!?!?!?! HUH?

SPRAY the stupid dog.....and if the owner gets ticked, tell them that they should be glad it was ONLY vinegar and water and not MACE........and that they should keep their dog CONFINED or it COULD get hit by a car......and that the LAW requires the idiot dog to be on a LEASH........and that they'd be getting a LOT MORE than vinegar and water if the crazy mongrel were to BITE YOU!!!!!!

I totally agree. If that dog is charging you & your dog I say spray also. Especially if there are signs of aggression.

just my 2 cents

I would NEVER think or act fast enough to be able to spray the offending dog - and if it is mace/pepper spray it can affect the SPRAYER as well - leaving you unable to defend your dog.

If you KNOW there is a loose dog problem in your area I would carry a walking stick rather than spray.

AND I would tell ANY owner I knew of WITH a neighborhood loose dog that if their dog charges my dog I will feel WELL within my rights to fight their dog off - so PLEASE keep your animal contained.

You know it is usually small dog I see roaming and charging us most. I have a pretty good squirt bottle that sprays at distances that I hook in my fanny pack.

The whole thing that worries me the most is even though my dog is on a leash god forbid something happend it would still be the evil rottweiler that hurt the small dog to the neighborhoods eyes.

I have notice the more I walk my girl though the more intrigue in the neighborhood and the more I can share my kind girl with them.

I must agree with the spray first, talk later opinion. Prevent possible injury to you and yours first. Then maybe tomorrow stop by and talk to the owner about the loose dog and what could possibly happen. Worst case, alert the local animal control authorities to the problem. The last thing you want is to have your dog blamed for an incident it didn't cause.

I think I'm going to have to buy some mace. Everytime, I decide to walk Zoe, some kid with an uncontrollable pitbull is always around. This dog is on a chain and pulling against the chain to get to me and my dog and darn near draggin the kid with him.

This has happened to me twice within a month. Unfortunately, I don't know the kid or where he lives, but I know soon this dog is going to get away from this kid.

This same thing happened to me just tonight
I was walking Dash down my own street coming home from a walk around the neighborhood. This mongrel mutt ankle-biter came tearing into the street yapping and growling( I give the dog one thing, it had intestinal fortitude to be coming after my rottie) I saw Dash just basically roll her eyes like" Oh Puhleeze" she is such a good girl.:D Anyhow. I stomped my feet to scare the dog away, it was about 5 feet from us. This" Lady" came running out screaming" Pedro!! come here angel did that mean woman try to hurt you" I stopped dead in my tracks and turned around and calmly stated that her dog should not be running loose into the street and she is lucky my dog is so well mannered when it comes to obnoxious dogs charging her.. well that was all it too to set her off.. she started screaming nasty words at me telling me I shouldn't be walking my "dangerous dog" around the neighborhood where kids live blah blah blah.yadda yadda yadda. It was all I could do to turn and walk away. I promptly came home and called A.C. and let them know this dog is never in a fenced yard and runs at large. They called me back to let me know SHE filed a complaint against ME saying I was allowing my "vicious rottweiler" to " taunt her dog" Buwahhaaaahaaaa.. any way SHE got a ticket cuz the dog was out when animal control went to check. They told me she doesn't own the street and as long as my dog is leashed I can walk her past that dog's yard anytime I want.:p next time.. I'm carrying my pepper spray!

What a night for you. I am glad she got the ticket.

I know alot of people like mace which is good for if a stranger would mess with you...wait no stranger will mess with someone with a rottie duh. Anyhow Vinegar and water works great and is less dangerous :)
