Excited on walks, excited bowels..

When Parker and I go to the park, we go for at least an hour. I typically have to take 4 - 5 bags with me because he goes multiple times. By the end of the walk, he'll be straining but he's empty.

I know it's just due to the excitement of the long walk. Maybe some for the need to mark (in addition to widdling on everything upright). But the loose and then non-successful attempts are less than impressive. :p

Anything to make the walks less exciting?

I suspect you are correct and that it is marking. Almost out of pee - well, let's try the bowels. You might start out by not allowing him to mark at all except one time and that should not be until at least half way through your walk, you chose the tree or spot, stay there until he's covered as much as he wants, and then no more. Just pop the lead and tell him "uhh uhh"..... See what happens then. You know he can hold his urine for that length of time.

Hi Trish, Czar did the exact same thing , then was diagnosed with an ulcer:( , in addition to the lyme. He no longer does that on walks and as Judi said, don't let him pee where ever he wants when you're on a walk. We allow Czar to pee before and after a walk and we pick the spot:D . He is much much better on walks now and that way you have better control as well, chosing when and where he goes. Judi gave me that little tip and what a difference:D .

Most of mine will have 1 or 2 sloppy poops when out for walks or at a new and exciting place. Like you said not very impressive to the public . At home we have normal poop, they save the messy stuff for excitement :(

Prior to our walks, she goes out into her dog yard and when she's done going to the toilet I take her. If she takes too long a time, I give her a "Go Pee-pee" or "Go Poo-poo" command whichever is appropriate and she does. Life is just so much easier that way. Of course that is one of the benefits of having a female, they don't need to prove something everwhere they go. Oh, I also don't let her go at training classes.

Great advice all - Thanks! :D

I should have mentioned that this is when he's off leash - so a leash-pop-correction isn't possible. This never occurs on leash.

When he's on leash, I do control when and where he goes. If I didn't, we'd never get anywhere!! LOL

Even when off leash there is no reason to give up your bossiness...... you can sure as heck tell him "no" "keep moving' or back goes the leash.

One of the things you need to recognize is that this piss on everything is an expansion of territory and often leads up to posturing and aggression to other dogs that will be encountered. It's allowing him to strut around saying "mine" and "mine" and "that's mine too". You might want to rethink allowing him to be off lead away from home until he's more mature and settled.

good girl. He is at the age where you don't want to allow him too much freedom or he's going to get uppity with you and everyone else. Don't tell him I've ruined his life plan for him........

LOL :) Naw - he's good about it. We stayed on leash tonight and once he realised he wasn't going everywhere, he settled into a nice walk. What a difference! Only one bag!! LMAO :D

I'm not so sure having a female makes a difference here...when my sister in law and I take the dogs for a walk, Cheyanne is constantly wanting to go back and mark over where Ben has piddled...cracks me up to watch her squat AND lift a leg.

On the other hand...when we really settle into the walk, no stopping is allowed...the dogs are usually 3-4 feet in front of us when the trail isn't crowded, and they have that length of lead and the six feet of lead after we pass them to do their stuff...after that, it's a quick "Cmon, lets go!" and they're back in stride.

Normally they'll poop on the walks, and we walk where there are 'poop cans' along the trail so we don't have to carry it all the way (LOVE THAT!!!). Ben tends to have a normal poop and a somewhat runny one when out for a walk....he's so much more animated after he poops....it's funny....like he's saying "OH...I feel MUCH better!" What a gooberhead I have!

You had mentioned this awhile back in another thread and we took the advice, he was just starting to lift that leg then. Boy it is so nice not to have a dog that feels he needs to leave his contribution to the tree mail fund all the time. The only time we slack off a bit is when we are out in the woods, he is still on lead but we are a tad more leinient, and I am wondering Judi, if that is a mistake?

Not really. I recommend limiting the dog's marking when they are adolescent, when they have shown any dog to dog aggression or when they appear to be over-doing it. If you aren't sure where your dog is going with his growing up, it can just be a good practice to make sure the dog knows you control it, and mincturition on walks or hikes (don't ya love that word?) should not be allowed at all with a dog that is showing aggression. It is their way of claiming territory. It doesn't hurt them one iota to not mark up the neighborhood for the length of time of a walk. If you have a dog that is content with its position and doesn't attempt to drag you to where they want to pee, no harm, no fault but as I said, with you young boys, they can just darn well wait.

Had to look it up! To urinate, or to want to urinate.

:)
