Toys

I'm fairlly new here and I was curious what kind of toys last with your dogs. Also what are some of the wierdest things your dogs try to play with? Looking forward to the responses.

One of my dogs favorite toys to chew on is her Nyla Bones. She loves them and they do last quite a long time.

The weirdest thing she likes to play with is empty soda bottles, the .5 Liter. Every chance she gets, she'll steal one of them, carry it around for awhile and finally lay down somewhere to chew on it. I encourage her to carry it around but once she decides it's time to chew it up I take it away from her and it goes into the recycle bin. Funny, once I take it from her, she'll never pull it out of the bin.

Well, we've probably got one of just about every dog toy made here. Rope bones, tennis balls, tennis balls on ropes, Kongs, Kongs on a rope, Kong treat ball, Wiggly Giggly ball, soccer balls, rubber squeaky toys, Nylabones, Frisbees (soft bite and hard plastic), and a wide assortment of stuffed animals with squeakers/grunters/other noise-makers.

How do I afford such a large assortment? Easy, I don't let my dogs chew and shred up toys. We have a trunk with a lid in which we store the toys. They have access to the toys when they are playing with me, but when they settle down for a chew, they are only allowed certain items (Kongs, Nylabones, real bones). That way I don't have to worry about them swallowing cotton batting and getting a bowel obstruction, and I don't have to keep replacing toys. We have some toys here that are approaching 4 years old.

Rott- Wiley... I had to laugh when I read this. My Sheriff does the same thing. He's only 7 weeks, and he's walking around with this big plastic bottle in his mouth. When we first saw him do this, we thought it was the funniest thing. I've been wondering what types of toys we should purchase for him. What about the raw-hide bones?

LOL -- problem is, my girl is 2 years old and still loves her bottles.

Rawhide chews are excellent for them but they are by no means a long term chew item. Even the larger ones only last minutes in our house, for puppies they should last a little longer.

Ready for the list??? :p

Julius has FINALLY started loving his Nylabones. He's had his one Nylabone since he was nine weeks old & he is JUST now finally showing interest in it. He'll chew away at his Galieo for quite a bit of time.

He also loves the bungee stuffed animals that he can stretch out & shake all over the place.....at times clearing the coffee table of the chess set as he did yesterday! :p :D We still have all of his stuffed animals from when he was nine weeks old with the exception of one that was poorly made. He just doesn't feel the need to shred them & we don't let him. He also loves anything OBNOXIOUS. He has this one squeaky toy that has the most annoying sound but it's one of his favorites so we let it be.....

Julius also enjoys the soda bottles too. When we were on vacation two weeks ago Julius & I played with a soda bottle in the yard for a long time. He loves things that crunch or make funny noises when he bites down on them.

My current girl just loves a simple ball, small enough to fit in her mouth and any stuffed animal she can destroy.

My first rottie loved empty milk jugs, cleaned out, he would push them around in the back yard, for hours, just playing.... and he loved my broom, (I didn't know he had it) when he was a pup he would drag it around, thinking he was the king of the world....

The worst mishap was two garden hoses, in one summer....he pretty much sectioned those off, into tiny smaller hoses.....that was right in the midst of puppyhood... I highly recommend keeping your garden hoses up high....:D

Lots of people here are not fond of giving rawhide (me included). Some dogs have never had a problem, but some have had terrible digestion and possessiveness problems with them. A lot of the rawhide you see in stores now has been cured with chemicals such as arsenic, food dyes, etc.. I don't recommend them. There are much safer long-lasting treats to give them such as big uncooked marrow bones from the butcher.

The WILDEST thing that my gorl plays with is a bowling ball
LOL. She gets board with it quickly, but it sure is cute to watch her roll that ball around....

Here are a couple of older threads I found discussing rawhide for you to check out:

Julius does get rawhides but either Ryan or I has to be in the room & we carefully monitor it. We toss out the bones when they get too small.

I guess I should have specified that you need to get the ones that are free of arsenic and dyes. My bad.

As far as the possessiveness issues -- there should not be any issues!

Thanks "Skip" for the advise about the rawhide bones. I've never really been too fond of those myself, but my husband loves giving them to the dogs. I will pass this information on to him.

Brooke & Ryan.... I will go to the "older threads" you've suggested and read up on the rawhide bones. Thanks

One other thing...

When he's biting on everything in sight, should we offer him a toy each time instead?

Chivas loved her nyla bones. And she would play with any toy I brought her from stuffed toys to ropes. She was mad about stuffed toys with squeekers or ones that made any kind of animal noise like her horsy neighing. I still have all her toys in her toy box. She would dissect the ones that made noises after they stopped making noises! And she also loved to flip her metal bowels over and push them around the floor with her paws, she would make the cutest little puppy barks and be SOOOOOOOO happy. I miss her so much.
