The Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson
Rottweilers for Dummies by Richard Beauchamp

Start with those two. There are lots of more comprehensive Rottweiler books, but I think Rottweilers for Dummies is a good place to start for someone who is completely new to the breed. It concentrates on the basics and gives a good overview. :)

Welcome Leanne - you've had great feedback already! Sounds like you got a great dog and welcome to the forums and I'll third Rottweilers For Dummies" as a wonderful book!

Thought I'd add this - from the ADRK (German) Rottweiler breed standard:
"Character and temperament: He is descended from friendly and peacable stock and by nature loves children, is affectionate, obedient, trainable, and enjoys working..."

There you go, you can give the nay-sayers that little nugget of information! :)
I don't have children, but have had Rottweilers (five in all) since 1987. Four have been unfailingly patient and gentle with kids - one my current ones is a registered therapy dog who goes to a nursing home and a home for troubled kids on a regular basis. The one dog I would not trust around small fast moving children :p is one I took in as an untrained, intact adult.

Well trained and stable Rottweilers are fabulous family dogs, you made a GREAT choice!

I agree with the others get Rottweilers for Dummies

Don't let the name throw you off, even an experinced Rottweiler owner can benefit by this book!

Glad to hear she did great in class, although this really does not surprise me , after all it is a Rottie you got there and certainly one of the smartest breeds . ;) :D

Oh, great, one of the books I got at the library the other day was Rottweilers for Dummies! I'll start with that one. I was reading The Ultimate Dog Training book (or similar), written by a guy who apparently has a show on PBS. So far it's a riot, and seems very much like the training we got today (lots of praise).

I also saw an interesting title on Amazon: Training your rottweiler by McNinch. Anyone read this?

i must agree with

the majority of the folks that have replied. I never left my young children alone with any dog, poodle, shnoodle or shepherd.
However my daughter who was at the time 15 when I got my rottie pup did most of his training, along with myself. He ( I must admit) does better at listening to her commands, I guess I am number 2 alpha. She has been a good mom to him, but she was a mature and fairly good sized girl when we got him. Any child under 13 or 14 (if they are decent sized) should not be left with a dog.....(especially a large one).
Personally my cats have done more damage to humans than any of my dogs could ever dream of doing, but that is a case by case basis.....I think the same should go for cats!

Welcome!

I have a 1 year old Human child and 3 rescued Rottweilers.

They are wonderful with her. My husband & I did our research prior to adopting our 1st Rott. We chose Rotts specifically because of how wonderful they can be with children.

Of course, thanks to 5 years of infertility, we were able to train our Rotts prior to our daughter being born......

Last Saturday, we celebrated my daughter's 1st birthday with family & friends. This included our 3 Rotts, 2 Labs, a Norwegian Elkhound, and 8 children under the age of 4.

Everything went great. The dogs were roaming free at the party (caveat - my Rotts are extremely well trained - not bragging hubby did all the work)

It's all in the training!!!!!

Congrats on the addition to your family & enjoy.
