First Night With New Puppy

Hi All,

Got my new pup this evening. I was supposed to get two, but the @#% irresponsible BYB let the puppies get into anti-freeze so you know the outcome. My pup was the only one of 16 to survive.

I'll have to get her to the vet next week to get her checked out.

Also, any of you that have a single pup and can remember...what do I for the constent crying.

Still awake...

Oh my God... :( I am so sorry that happened, how awful. How about mamma dog? Are you absolutely sure your pup didn't get any antifreeze? Actually I don't know what happens if a dog just gets a tiny bit... I would get her to the vet first thing Monday, at any rate. I'm sure the "breeder" didn't do any shots or vet care, you want to be real sure she's healthy!

Do you mean your pup is crying when she's in her crate or wherever you have her at night? That's normal, she's suddenly had her whole little world turned upside down and she's lonely. Make sure she's tired out when you put her to bed, give her something warm and soft to snuggle up to, and ignore the whining. Hopefully someone else will have better suggestions, it's been a while since I had a puppy.

Hope you got some sleep!

Thanks Carina43.

We didn't go to bed until 2 am. I found an old wind-up clock and put it in her crate. She only woke up twice before 7 am.

No, I don't think she got into the anti-freeze. I was told by an reliable source that it only takes a teaspoon of anti-freeze to kill a horse, but I will make a vet appointment this week.

Right now, I'm off to the store to get some flea and tick stuff. I just gave her a bath and the sight wasn't pretty. I had to bathe her twice.

Anti-freeze shuts down the kidneys by clogging up the filtration portion of the kidney. If the puppy is peeing well, I wouldn't worry too much, as by now, you'd probably see signs. I still would get a check up, as suggested, but you're probably out of the woods.

Yes, she's peeing and eating well .. as well as whinning.. which stops as soon as she's in my arms. I finally got the fleas off her which could've been at lot of her problem.

Hopefully, we can get the hang of house training soon.

The stuff at the store (Hartz, et. al.) is garbage. Pick up something from your vet like Frontline, etc...

Well, I went to several stores...not a whole lot open at 8 am (WalMart, grocery stores...). I finally had to wait until the pet store opened at 9 am.

I bought some Zodia shampoo, but will probably start buying supplies online because of the lack of variety.

I'd try the natural and nontoxic route to flea control myself. Esp. for a puppy. (regular dog shampoo baths, if that didn't do it, citrus fruit peel wash etc.) and get the dog on the best food possible, which from other posts sounds like you are trying to do. As I wrote I think to you ???? by rescue dog was a flea bag, we got past it without any toxic chemicals, and now with great nutrition he seems not to pick up fleas anymore.

Hot water bottle, soothing music sometimes helps sleeping. So too having bed spot be near the master's bed.

Hope it has improved.

Thanks Kate.

The shampoo I bought for just for puppies. It says to use it every 28 days. It seems to have done the trick...

I tried having her sleep near me in the computer room, but all she does is whine for me to pick her up. I decided to move her to the living room, give her the alarm clock and a dirty t-shirt, and turn the lights out. As long as there is light, she wants to play. Her bedtime is 10 pm. We did that 2 am stuff her first night.
