| billy: gotta agree with carina on this. thats a relatively small concrete pad your talking about. at about 4" thick it can be broken up and hauled away if necessary. how long did you plan on having your dogs anyway? forgive the sarcasm but i just wanted to offer another perspective. if you're entirely against concrete you can grade the area and lay pavers (concrete squares). they can be cut with a masons chisel if needed, but it would be an undertaking. should solve your problem though. probably no more than a $100 and one of your weekends. get hold of a do-it-yourself book. beleive me its worth doing it right the first time, i know from experience. have to dig down four to six inches, then grade the area flat, then lay a layer of gravel, then a layer of sand, then finally the pavers, then sweep sand in beween the joints, wet it all down and repeat. all the while making sure the finished surface is level. its pretty solid and not as permanent as cement. better you than me :) good luck; i've paid my dues and have the sore back to prove it. |

| I built a kennel on the side of my house for my rottie. He doesn't dig so the kennel is set up on the grass and he can go under my fenced in deck to have lots of shade. I do however strongly suggest you put a lock on the door. I don't dare leave the door unlocked just in case someone tried to let him out. Good Luck!! Stacy

| Building a kennel Thanks for the info, I didn't want the cement because it was so permanent... But is there a definitive health risk associated w/ gravel aside from ingestion i.e. known foot problems, etc...? |

| When we move house I am going to buy a Children's Cubby House for out dogs.It will be in the fully fenced backyard and they'll be free to go from the cubby into the yard. I thought of kennels but they wouldn't use them. [ August 06, 2001: Message edited by: DianaC ] |

| I reccomend using cedar chips for the ground they are replaceable, softer than gravel or concrete... and repell insects you can put the cedar chips over the top of a concrete slab also, if you so desire [ August 06, 2001: Message edited by: Mattweiser ]
