Loosing Teeth

Hello All,

I was wondering if Rottie's lose their baby teeth, so new ones grow in? I hvae a 5 month old femle Rottie I was looking in her mouth and noticed she already lost one front canine tooth, I believe that's what it's called, and the one on the other side is now loose as well. Is this common, or from something that she has chewed on or bitten to cause the loss of teeth.

All dogs lose their baby teeth which are replaced with adult teeth. Give her plenty of chew toys to help work them lose and ice to help the discomfort. Might also try to get any dropped teeth before she can eat them. Shouldn't do her any harm if she swallows a few, but better to just toss them

The canines are usually lost towards the end of baby teeth phase, so your pup probably has most of her adult teeth in already. Most pups swallow their teeth when they dislodge them by chewing. We have about 6 of Max's baby teeth that popped out while chewing his bone on my lap.

Make sure your pup has plenty of sturdy, safe chew toys that are suitable for her new adult teeth as a teething pup is a voracious chewer. Now that her adult teeth are in, don't be surprised when her ability to decimate her current chew toys and bones advances rapidly. This is about the time we changed from puppy nylabones and gumabones to durable nylabones, and from stuffed toys and squeaky toys to kongs, sterilized leg bones and marrow bones.

I agree. Now that Julius has lost all of his baby teeth his is able to tear apart the Roarhide Nylabone that he had FOREVER when he was smaller & still teething. He's FINALLY showing interest in his regular Nylabone. I think he's frustrated that he can't chew it up very well. But yes, their chewing intensity DOES increase!

:)

I have to say Jaxom's chewing went WAY down after he cut his teeth. He's more inclined to try and shred a rope (and eat the strings I might add) than chew up a kong, ball, or other rubber-type toy.

We have noticed a huge increase in Guerins chewing over the last couple of weeks and he has lost a couple of teeth. He is 4 months old. So we are keeping lots of stuff at hand for him to chew on and he is doing well keeping to those things.
