how to eliminate urine odor from kennel area

Can anyone suggest how to eliminate the urine odor from my dogs' pen area (where they are kept during workdays)? I did a search and came up with the suggestion of spreading garden lime. Is this the best way? Should I be hosing things down with bleach?

The outside pen communicates with a large indoor (basement) pen. Part of the outside pen is under an elevated porch (I can walk upright there), so it is completely shaded there. The rest is a mix of shaded and open. The ground under the porch area is cobbles. the ground in the completely outside area is a mix of dirt (well-drained) and rocks, with some grass here and there.

The dogs seem to especially like to urinate under the porch area where it is shaded becasue this is the first section as soon as they come outside from the indoor pen. Unfortunately, I think this helps keep the odor in. Thus, when we (humans and dogs) are relaxing on the porch, we get the urine odor wafting up.

thanks for any advice!

K&S,

We have used a product called Sweet PDZ for our horses' stalls to help with the strong urine odor. I haven't used it in quite awhile and can't recall the exact contents (I'm thinking lime) but it works really well. It comes in 10 lb. bags (probably bigger bags available) and is a white powder you sprinkle over the urine sites. The boys tend to pee in the same spot in their stall, so we usually just spread the powder over the pee spot (either over rubber mats or in the dirt in the ourside pens) and then cover that with shavings. I'm not sure about leaving it uncovered. I never had any skin reactions from it and if it was harmful to my horse, I wouldn't have used it.

Good Luck

Believe it or not, white vinegar works great. It takes out the amonia smell all together. I used it when mine were still house training and went on the carpets. Works like a charm! :D
