Any Rott friendly insurance companies in CA?

Does anyone know of an insurance company that does not discriminate against Rottweiler owners (in California)?

We have Mercury Homeowners Insurance. When we were purchasing our house, the agent asked if we had a dog and what kind. At the time we didn't, so I told her no. She said that if we had one of "those vicious breeds" she would have to find us a different policy holder. Since that time, we acquired our Rottie and I've looked all through our paperwork and it never specifies anything about specific dog breeds. I think that some agents prefer not to broker people with certain dog breeds out of their own personal preferences and liability issues, not specifically because the company defines it as such.

I think State Farm has a "no bite history / no bite training" requirement, but not a breed specific requirement.

Any insurance company will or should discriminate where there is a bite history. That just makes business sense.

Travelers has an on-going marketing program with AKC. They do not discriminate on breeds.

I have Kemper. I don't even remember my agent asking if I had dogs when I first got it.... When I talked to my agent last week, we chat about my dogs and he didn't even care what they are.

This is the response I received from AAA Insurance when I applied for a quote:

"I WAS WORKING ON YOUR QUOTE, WHEN I NOTICED THAT YOU HAVE A PET ROTTWEILER.UNFORTUNATELY, THE AUTO
CLUB CANNOT INSURE RESIDENTS WITH PIT BULLS OR ROTTWEILERS AT THIS TIME. SORRY ABOUT THAT. IF THERE IS ANYTHING ELSE I CAN DO FOR YOU, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. THANKS,THE AUTO CLUB"

I agree that it would not be wise to insure someone who has ANY breed of dog with a bite history. But to not even be considered for a quote! I am stunned and I want everyone to be aware that this company discriminates against responsible owners of Rottweilers and Pittbulls.

How long are we going to have to pay for these idiots who don't take a responsible ownership role with their dogs?

JROD, I have Farmer's Insurance (in CA), but I only have Renter's Insurance. When I purchased the policy I told the agent that I had a Rottweiler. She said it didn't matter. So I would give them a call and see what they say.

I was checking rates w/ Nationwide about 3 years after and they don't insure Rott owners (in CA at least).

Bite training is non-insurable???? Hmmmm, it seems that bite trained dogs have the best obedience (if done correctly), i.e. someone who really wants the well trained dog as opposed to the ATTACK dog.

I was thinking about this the other day and was wondering if insurance companies (who discriminant against breeds) would consider dogs with obedience titles, or other designed test to determine a dog's soundness (i.e. CGC, etc.). Or is this making the owners of these breeds jump through hoops that they shouldn't have to? But then is this introducing Breed Specific Legislation? But then it would also allow those of us w/ Rotts, Pits, GSD's, etc. to get insurance and prove that our dogs are obedient. It would also encourage those who don't have obedient dogs to go out there and train and learn about the breeds.... Food for thought.

My friend's mother works in claims for AAA homeowners and her stories of that company and it's resistance to pay out anything is one of the reasons we didn't go with them. She doesn't even carry their insurance. She works with a lot of the bite cases and has come to learn just how irresponsible people are with their dogs. It just infuriates her.
But you're right, they won't cover you if you own one of the top 5 "vicious dogs". As of now I think they are: Rottweilers, Pit Bulls, Dobermans, German Shepherds, Chows (Akitas might have surpassed Chows, at least in California)
