Doggy Dreams?

My 20 week old pup is soo funny to watch sleeping sometimes. The other day, it looked like he wass enjoying a eight course meal with the way he was licking and chomping down on nothing while he was sleeping!! He also likes to lay on his back and start kicking or running? madly while he is still fast asleep. :D I know I have seen "animal" behaviourists on the TV stating they actually think dogs and cats dream. I'd have to say they do, judging from both our pup's behaviour and cat's when I catch them licking or kicking in their sleep too? Anyone else's dog the same? I actually had a friend tell me her Rottie howls and barks sometimes very loudly but he is dead to the world sleeping. HAHA

Sometimes when Selkey is sleeping she will twich her paws or hinds. One time she was walking, laying on her side of course, moving her paws like she was taking steps.
I'v noticed that she does this after a busy day or a lot of excitment.
Is it dreaming?I think it's nerves.Maybe caused by things in their memory? If they see images when they sleep then it's kind've dreaming, except it's a rerun of what they just did not long ago.
Oh yea, sometimes she wines when she twiches. :( ... ;)

Two out of my 3 show signs of doggy dreaming. They will go through the motions of running, and even bark pretty loudly :)

Did you know that every 4.5 seconds a cat or dog in america is "put to sleep"?

I must say that we certainly think doggy's dream. Hannibal has been sound asleep and running, growling, sitting up and barking and when he is done he is snoring again. The first time it happened it scared us, but now it is pretty regular.

My dad used to say that if you put a handkerchief (or a kleenex) underneath you dog's head when he/she dreams, then sleep with it under your pillow at night, you will have the same dream. lol.

Hey! I might just try that! ;)

One of my rescues has such bad "nightmares". She cries, howls, and has even expressed her anal glands several times over the years. Maybe I don't want to know what she's dreaming! :(

Reba gets into such a sound sleep that in the middle of the night she will start howling and goes full force!!! Then when we wake her up she looks at us like we are nuts and why did we do that!!! Coarse our hearts are in cardiac arrest from the sudden jolt out of bed from her howling we can't get our breath!!! But her look gets us laughing so hard it's hard for us to get back to sleep!

All three of my dogs twitch and yip at times when they are sleeping. Sometimes pretty loud, too.

I got them at an older age, so I never witnessed this personally, but I have heard that puppies are even more active when they sleep.

Only my rottie-lab sleeps totally on his back. When he gets active while he is sleeping (twitches/yips) he looks like he is swimming. That is quite beautiful to watch and someday I hope to get a photo of it. Aren't dogs the best? Humans aren't nearly as attractive when they are sleeping. :p

I was going to post the same topic. When Hans dreams he will start moving his legs like he's running. But when he was a pup he would make a sucking sound like he was nursing. It's nice to know that dogs have dreams just like us :)

There is no way I will ever say dogs don't dream!! All my dogs dream and I believe they dream just as we do. I believe they are sometimes fantasys and other times nightmares and just everyday thought dreams. I have been known to wake all my dogs up for nightmares befor. (BECAREFUL DOING THAT)

I agree also!!! Atti dreams a lot!! Sometimes he lets out little barks, and sometimes he whines like he does during the day if the kids are outside playing and he wants to join them!!! Then there are the ones that wake us up cause he is flat out barking and we have to go see if it's him dreaming again or if there really is someone outside!!! (Thankfully, he has only barked like that 2 times when he was asleep!) ;)
