Lots of paper towels, carpet or floor cleaner (or both), extra blankets for the crate in case your puppy chews them up or makes a mess of them, nail clippers or a dremmel, a collar if the puppy does not already have one, ID tag, lots of patience and a good sense of humor!

I personally like leather leashes, but it is all about personal preference. Oh, maybe get more than one because puppies like to chew through them if you are not watching!

I recommend "nature's miracle", for carpet cleaning, its available at the pet stores, and does a good job on the urine smell and cleanup. There are also called "oops" they look like paper towels, those absorb alot of urine, and are very handy also.

On the collar. Just remember, that tiny baby collar, will last just a while...:D The size will change probably a few times, over the first several months at least.

I also recommend stainless steel bowls. They have small and large. They are somewhat pricey, but well worth it. They don't absorb the food smell, like plastic does, and they last forever.

Congratulations, and get some sleep, you'll need lots of rest for puppy power. ;)

Ha, you almost got me with the Iams...! :D

I bought almost $100 worth of dog toys for Cooper when I was waiting for him to come home...and he ignored most of them. Plastic pop bottles, logs from the woodpile, and old (cleaned) lambswool paint rollers were his favourite toys.

Water & food bowls - and another vote for leather leashes...maybe some bitter apple for the chewing issues you are bound to have! I just use cheap adjustable nylon collars, they grow out of them so fast.

And a really good training book, one that will take you through all stages of the pup's growing, so you know what to expect. Rottweilers for Dummies is a great one - and Ian Dunbar has written a great puppy book too - someone else will have the title, I'm having a senior moment.

Wow - one week, that is exciting!
Don't forget, you'll need lots of patience too....:)
Oh - a digital camera so you can post cute puppy pictures in ChitChat!

How about a bowl for feeding and one for water? I also have a feeding stand for my dogs too.

Well, you have to give him something to drink out of until he's big enough to reach into the toilet bowl! :p

Good suggestions, definatly OUT or nature's miracle. And might I suggest, as I clean for a profession, a steam cleaner for the carpet INSTEAD of an extraction type carpet cleaner? The steam kills the bacteria and cleans so no oder to go back too and does not create mold/mildew by leaving carpet and pad wet/damp. Eureka makes a very nice mid-price steam cleaner that will be all you need. Do not get the little cheesey hand held one, get the one that looks like a canister vac. Good luck and most of all enjoy this time it passes so FAST!

The Hoover Steam Vac is excellent at keeping the carpets looking new. We've also had good luck with the Woolite spot remover (including wine)...

You're laughing, we adopted a rescue girl who was around 4 years old and she didn't know how to eat out of a bowl. Every meal, and I mean every meal she would dump the bowl and sort the food out on the floor. Her eyes would light up every time she say a take-out box too. One can only guess what her life was like before we got her. LOL She lived with us for 10 years and I can honestly say she was the nicest and sweetest dog we could ever had thought about owning. I'd give anything to have just another week with her.

If you're looking for a great book, try:

How Dogs Learn

Can be found at: http://www.dogwise.com

Agree on the leather leashes, metal bowls and LOTS of photographs. You'd be surprised how quickly this time passes. :) :)

Remember, full soda cans make EXCELLENT puppy toys, as they roll, and are capable of spraying while they roll, once punctured. Wonder why I know that??

On the subject of books, I read "The Culture Clash" and thoroughly enjoyed it. Has anyone read "Don't shoot the Dog", I've seen it reccomended in a couple of different places, wondered if it's worth picking up as well.

I'm still looking for a good book about general dog behavior, particularly body language, communication, and pshycology...not so much about training so to speak, more of a 'this is why they do this'.

"Excel-Erated Learning" by Dr Pamela Reid is a great book. Also
"How Dogs Learn" by Mary Burch/Jon S Bailey. If I had to choose, I'd go with Dr Reid's book. Also, read the Karen Pryor book, "Dont' Shoot the Dog", it was excellent and many of the points made in the book can be useful in dealing with people too!
Happy reading!
