You should get some books on them here: www.amazon.com

And, read this board all day for 4 straight weeks ... ;)

Also, try not to use ALL CAPS when you post, its considered shouting in the Internet world ...

Melisa - Congrats on your new pup. Many of us did alot of reading 'prior' to ownership, so you'll want to get real busy! I wish you the best. Training info should be available from your breeder, or check with a local Rottweiler club. How old is Shantie?
Best wishes -
kathy

Congrats on your new puppy and welcome to the wonderful world of rotties!:D

Definately sign up for a puppy class at one of your local training clubs. It is money well spent! Read as much as you can. Search the archives at this site and you will find alot of great information!

Enjoy your new puppy!

Hope you have real good luck with your new puppy. Do you have a vet to take her to so she can get her shots. She will need to have them before you can get her into a puppy class. Best of luck with her and enjoy her, they grow sooooo quickly.

:D Shantie must be so-o-o adorable! You'll want to have her vet checked. Please understand that Rotties are very succeptable to parvo.
As soon as she's a bit older, you'll want to enroll her in a reputable puppy obedience class. Rotties are smart and she's likely to be the star of the class
Rotties are also very strong minded, so the classes will help keep you the boss.
Best wishes with her! Post some pics on Chit-Chat. We ALL love to see pics, of course!
Keep reading, here and you're sure to learn very quickly.;)

Yes definitely training - start early with Puppy Classes. It's never too early to get them started. Training is part of being a responsible pet owner. Do a search on this forum and see what assistance you can get with getting her started now. Read - Read - Read.

Melisa and Shantie ~ Welcome to the wonderful world of Rottweiler's they are a wonderful breed and will be your life long companion.

I want to emphasise this. Training classes should be a part of EVERY dog's life in my opinion, regardless of breed. They're not just for problem dogs, they're not just for novice owners and they're not just for people who want to show their dogs. A well-trained dog is a happier dog, and a well-trained owner is a happier owner - a combination of the two leads to greater understanding and easier problem solving. A well-trained dog is a joy to be around.

Melissa,

How old was she when you got her? I'm guessing 5-6 weeks? If that is the case, training classes are a must, and you should explain to the trainer that you got your puppy too young and are they experienced in working with such dogs?

The reason I mention this is because the puppies learn very valuable lessons in being a dog between the ages of 5 and 8 weeks. Truly, these lessons are best learned via littermates. Things such as bite inhibition, "how to speak dog" and other behaviorisms are learned at this time. If you are not diligent in your raising of your pup, you could later have some very serious dog aggression issues.

Knowing this ahead of time, you have full advantage of the situation, and can work hard to turn her into the best pup she can be. Socialization is of UTMOST importance. This is true with any Rottweiler pup, but even more so with one who left it's litter too early. Keep her around people and dogs constantly until she is at least 2 years old. Take obedience and other classes (maybe agility?) to keep her around people and dogs, and also, to have an experienced trainer be able to see her, and catch (at an early stage) any problems which may be brewing.

Hopefully all will go well, and you and she will have no problems, but please be aware that it's very common for puppies who go home too early to have a few issues, especially with biting and chewing.

Good luck, and keep up the hard work. This board is an excellent resource! :)

One other question: at what age did she get her first set of shots?? Usually these shots are done starting at 7-8 weeks, and then given 3-4 weeks apart. Any earlier, or any closer together, and they have lesser effects, and can possibly even cause problems later in life. If you do a search, you will find a lot of info in these forums on vacccines. :)
